I recently attempted an "emerge -uD world" and everything went smoothly, except the upgrade to GCC 4.7.3-r1. The relevant infos:

The last few lines of the build output

Code:
checking for objdir... .libs
checking for the correct version of gmp.h... yes
checking for the correct version of mpfr.h... yes
checking for the correct version of mpc.h... yes
checking for the correct version of the gmp/mpfr/mpc libraries... no
configure: error: Building GCC requires GMP 4.2+, MPFR 2.3.1+ and MPC 0.8.0+.
Try the --with-gmp, --with-mpfr and/or --with-mpc options to specify
their locations.  Source code for these libraries can be found at
their respective hosting sites as well as at
ftp://gcc.gnu.org/pub/gcc/infrastructure/.  See also
http://gcc.gnu.org/install/prerequisites.html for additional info.  If
you obtained GMP, MPFR and/or MPC from a vendor distribution package,
make sure that you have installed both the libraries and the header
files.  They may be located in separate packages.

emerge -pqv
Code:

Here are the versions of the libraries being complained about:

emerge -pqv mpc gmp mpfr
Code:
[ebuild   R   ] dev-libs/gmp-5.0.2_p1  USE="cxx -doc -static-libs"
[ebuild   R   ] dev-libs/mpfr-3.1.1  USE="-static-libs"
[ebuild   R   ] dev-libs/mpc-1.0.1  USE="-static-libs"

I'm sure there's something simple I'm missing, but for the life of me I can't find out what it is. Everything I've found has pointed to copying the libgmpxx library to a soft symlink for a file called 'libgmp3' or something, but that file is already there.

TIA

What does config.log say about the tests? That should tell you why it rejected your libraries.

is probably the important stuff? Mainly, that there were symbols weren't returned? And TLS refers to language support, yes?

Going by this config.log, you need at least rebuild dev-libs/mpc (probably revdep-rebuild against libmpfr.so.1).

I already rebuilt mpc, but when I did the revdep-rebuild -L libmpfr.so.1, things popped up. MPC, which I had already rebuilt (*shrug*) and GCC 4.6.3.

Thanks for pointing out the libmpfr.so.1. . .I didn't even notice that was missing in /usr/lib. I guess that's what I get for looking and troubleshooting at 1 in the morning.

Thank you much! :D I'm revdep'ing now, so hopefully that fixed the issue, but if it doesn't, I'll be back.

[edit]That fixed it! Again, thanks so much!

I have a similar problem with gcc-4.7.3-r1, but it occured not while updating the compiler. I first noticed the problem when I tried to compile a program from github. "./configure" told me that my compiler isn't able to compile C. So I tried to recompile gcc with the exact same result like "ARC2300" had until he fixed his problem (lucky you). I then checked wether I have installed the linux-headers and noticed that I have the wrong headers for my kernel 3.15.9 . So gladly ...
Code:
emere -av linux-headers

worked after allowing "linux-headers-3.15 ~amd64" in the kewords-file. Then I tried to emerge gcc again, but the problem remained.
Code:
revdep-rebuild

didn't find any linking problems even with explicitly telling it to check for "libmpfr.so.1". I am now feeling out of options.

Does it make sense to chroot from a live-cd to reermerge @system or gcc? Would I use than my broken compiler anyway? Are there any other options I can try to fix my situation?

Try the --with-gmp, --with-mpfr and/or --with-mpc options to specify
their locations.  Source code for these libraries can be found at
their respective hosting sites as well as at
ftp://gcc.gnu.org/pub/gcc/infrastructure/.  See also
http://gcc.gnu.org/install/prerequisites.html for additional info.  If
you obtained GMP, MPFR and/or MPC from a vendor distribution package,
make sure that you have installed both the libraries and the header
files.  They may be located in separate packages.
