Nothing (not a single thing) in /proc/cpuinfo is a USE flag. What exactly do you want to put in make.conf from there?

When I emerged vlc the site suggested some flags.
the site is: http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-gentoo.html
and their suggestion is to put the following use flags to Quote: | /etc/portage/make.conf |
Code: | dvd ffmpeg mpeg mad wxwindows aac dts a52 ogg flac theora
oggvorbis matroska freetype bidi xv svga gnutls stream vlm httpd cdda
vcd cdio live lua |
the use flags below to Quote: | /etc/portage/package.use |
Code: | media-video/vlc dvd ffmpeg mpeg mad
wxwindows aac dts a52 ogg flac theora oggvorbis matroska freetype
bidi xv svga gnutls stream vlm httpd cdda vcd cdio live |
I checked the cat /proc/cpuinfo to see what "sse" s it could support so I would arrange the flags in my make.conf file. I couldn't find ffmpeg at the cat /proc/cpuinfo but I have it in my make.conf file. I would like to know if this causes a problem in playing videos because I have problem in playing videos in a specific website. (Needless to say I can watch the mentioned videos from another computer moreover I was watching them on this box with my previous Gentoo installation) |

I'm not sure having understood correctly, but you won't find a "ffmpeg" flag in /proc/cpuinfo as it's not a CPU-specific thing. If you have the "sse" flag in /proc/cpuinfo then it's wise to add the "sse" USE flag to make.conf. Same thing with sse2, ssse3, pni (this is USE flag sse3), sse4_1, mmx and so on. |

John R. Graham and fturco thanks for the replies.
fturco you understood it correctly.
Quote: | you won't find a "ffmpeg" flag in /proc/cpuinfo as it's not a CPU-specific thing |
clears the haze for me.
From this point I should try diagnosing the problem of video playing.
The link for the problem video is:

Is it the same problem as topic https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-p-7404164.html? If so, I think it would be better to continue discussing it there as I think it's not a CPU-related problem but a Firefox/Flash one. |
