What is the small 'r' here?

One program that did not work for me now is the Sun Grid Engine. It appears that it changed to Oracle Grid Engine which seems quite bloated..

looks like udisk failed again:

* ERROR: sys-fs/udisks-1.0.4-r5::gentoo failed (compile phase):
* emake failed
wgetpaste /var/tmp/portage/sys-fs/udisks-1.0.4-r5/temp/build.log
Your paste can be seen here: http://bpaste.net/show/134790/

I tried to plug an external USB drive, it did not load, at least automatically as it did in the past.
dmesg does show that the drive was loaded

Also,
mount /dev/sdb1 /mnt/usb
fuse: failed to access mountpoint /mnt/usb: No such file or directory.

/mnt has only cdrom and floppy

auddoula,

I recall from an earlier post that you already have udisks-2 ... anyway
The wheel came off here ..
Code:
/usr/lib/gcc/x86_64-pc-linux-gnu/4.6.3/../../../../x86_64-pc-linux-gnu/bin/ld: warning: libudev.so.0, needed by /usr/lib/gcc/x86_64-pc-linux-gnu/4.6.3/../../../../lib64/libatasmart.so, not found (try using -rpath or -rpath-link)
/usr/lib/gcc/x86_64-pc-linux-gnu/4.6.3/../../../../lib64/libatasmart.so: undefined reference to `udev_new'

Its unlikely (e)udev is missing, or you would have had issues booting. The linker cant find the libudev.so.0 library for some reason.

Mount points for manual mounts must exist before you issue the mount command.
You need a
Code:
mkdir /mnt/usb

Automounters tend to create and destroy the mount points they use as the devices come and go.

thank you, I tried to locate libudev.so.0, but I could not find it. however, libudev.so exists in /usr/lib64 as does :
libudisks2.so libudisks2.so.0 libudisks2.so.0.0.0 libudev.so

auddoula,

I don't have libudev.so.0 because my system has a static /dev
Thats the way it was many years ago and I'm just playing on this install.

Its possible that libudev.so.0 is supposed to be a symlink to something. DONAHUE may be able to help with that, or I will when I boot into a more normal system tomorrow.

As we know that its (e)udev thats affected, you could try rebuilding whichever one you use.
Code:
emerge -1av ...

I did not install these, since I suspect the last one will bail out just like the last time.

auddoula,

My eudev install shows
Code:
ls -l  /lib64/libudev*
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root     16 Sep 16 13:29 /lib64/libudev.so.1 -> libudev.so.1.3.0
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 131144 Sep 16 13:29 /lib64/libudev.so.1.3.0

So I don't have libudev.so.0, I have its newer version libudev.so.1

Which version do your have?

If sys-fs/udisks-1.0.4-r5 depends on an old version of udev, its broken but there is another possibility ...
That you are mixing testings and stable packages on the same system

libudev.so.0 will be a symlink on your system, if it exists and it will point to a version of libudev.so older than 1.3

Code:
locate libudev
??
may provide some answers.

I did not have or need sys-fs/udisks-1.0.4-r5 when yesterday began only sys-fs/udisks-2.1.0, after emerging udisks:0 udisks:2 and unmerging udisks:0 four 32 bit gnome apps became dependent on sys-fs/udisks-1.0.4-r5 in emerge -uND world.
just for fun gcc-4.7.3 jumped in to my mostly stable system and earlier versions of gcc disappeared from gcc-config -l. If this happened to you
Code:
emerge libtool
env-update
source /etc/profile
is probably still a good idea.

Code:
emerge -av virtual/udev

* IMPORTANT: 3 news items need reading for repository 'gentoo'.
* Use eselect news to read news items.

* IMPORTANT: 3 config files in '/etc/portage' need updating.
* See the CONFIGURATION FILES section of the emerge
* man page to learn how to update config files.

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies... done!
[ebuild R ] virtual/udev-200 USE="gudev hwdb introspection keymap kmod (-selinux) -static-libs" 0 kB

Total: 1 package (1 reinstall), Size of downloads: 0 kB

Would you like to merge these packages? [Yes/No] No

I am afraid udisk is being really stubborn.. it choked on the last command here:

Code:
wgetpaste /usr/portage/sys-fs/udisks/udisks-1.0.4-r5.ebuild
for me to compare

emerge -1 udisks:0 here gives an entirely different build log from yours in that there are no calls for libudev at all, certainly none for libudev.so.0 .Try a virgin ebuild and package

Code:
rm /usr/portage/sys-fs/udisks/udisks*
rm /usr/portage/distfiles/udisks*
emerge --sync
emerge -1 libtool glibc
emerge -1av udisks:0 udisks:2
emerge uNDav world
