In the past week or so, cups has stopped working for me -- perhaps since the upgrade to 1.6.2. But the error messages are
quite uninformative, and it isn't clear how to go about fixing it. Here's what shows up in /var/log/cups/err_log:
Code:

W [03/Sep/2013:11:06:43 -0400] CreateDevice failed: org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown:The name org.freedesktop.ColorManager was not provided by any .service files
W [11/Sep/2013:16:27:07 -0400] CreateProfile failed: org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown:The name org.freedesktop.ColorManager was not provided by any .service files
W [11/Sep/2013:16:27:07 -0400] CreateDevice failed: org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown:The name org.freedesktop.ColorManager was not provided by any .service files

In the web interface, on the other hand, I get the message "Filter failed".

The printer is an HP LaserJet 1300, and works with Foomatic/pxlmono (recommended), and, as noted, worked reliably for well
over a year before developing the current problem.

Something similar seems to have happened on Ubuntu, where one supposed fix is to install avahi and run it before cups. I have
not tried that since I would rather not run avahi, but if that's the only way to get cups to work I'll do that.

Any suggestions for what to try? I'm running kernel 3.11.0, cups 1.6.2-r5, cups-filters 1.0.34-r1. I deeply hate cups.

I've had similar issues - The problem shown in the log file seems to be an issue of cups itself, I hope it will be fixed soon. I made the printer work again by using a different driver. Since I'm not at home at the moment I cannot check which one I finally used. Try using another driver if possible (try the postscript driver if you were using another one and vice versa).

Good luck!

Thanks for the suggestion. I've tried using two other printer drivers (both versions of
generic Postscript), and neither worked; they do offer an additional new error message
not given with the pxlmono driver, though:
Code:

E [13/Sep/2013:17:26:38 -0400] [cups-driverd] Bad driver information file "/usr/share/cups/drv/cupsfilters.drv"!
W [13/Sep/2013:17:27:42 -0400] CreateProfile failed: org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown:The name org.freedesktop.ColorManager was not provided by any .service files
W [13/Sep/2013:17:27:42 -0400] CreateDevice failed: org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown:The name org.freedesktop.ColorManager was not provided by any .service files

However, throughout all the problems I've been able to print to a remote networked
printer with no problems -- it's only on the local USB HP 1300 LaserJet that there seems
to be a problem, so I don't think I trust the "bad driver information file" message. But
I'll try to reinstall CUPS to see whether that helps.

Still looking for suggestions!

(And I still hate CUPS.)

Reinstallation of CUPS did not help.

Switching back to the pxlmono driver made the "bad driver information file" message
go away, but I still get the messages that CreateProfile and CreateDevice have failed,
and I still can't print to the USB-connected HP 1300 LaserJet.

Aaarrgghhhh.

Ah, its a directly connected usb printer - hm, have you made sure that usb printer support is disabled in kernel if the usb use flag is enabled for cups or vice versa (if usb printer support is in the kernel, the usb use flag for cups must be disabled, if no usb printer support is in the kernel, the usb use flag for cups must be enabled).
Still good luck!

That seems to have done it -- dueling USB drivers, I suppose. Anyway, I can print again,
which makes me much happier. Thanks for the help!

It's now a month or two later, and I'm back to having problems with cups.

Currently at cups 1.6.4, with a directly-connected HP LaserJet 1300.

Cups was emerged with the usb use flag, and usb printer support was disabled in the kernel.

I get the message "Printer Paused" every when trying to administer cups every time I try to print, even after
resuming the printer, and occasionally the message "filter not found". I get the problem with several different
drivers, e.g. pxlmono and Postscript for the HPLJ1300.

I can still print via cups with no problem to a networked printer -- just the local one is problematic.

Any ideas? Anyone?

Now =net-print/cups-1.7.1.
Remote b/w HP LaserJet 4350 Postscript (recommended) printer.

Similiar error messages in error_log since 02/Jul/2013:
Code:
W [19/Mar/2014:08:32:59 +0400] CreateProfile failed: org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown:The name org.freedesktop.ColorManager was not provided by any .service files
W [19/Mar/2014:08:32:59 +0400] CreateDevice failed: org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown:The name org.freedesktop.ColorManager was not provided by any .service files

P.S. Without any questions to printing facility itself.

I have exactly the same problem. I have been googling like mad, this thread is the best description of the problem, but it gives no solution!
It is not gentoo specific, it has been met eg on lubuntu.
My case: cups 2.0.3, brother dcp 9020 cdw, connected thru wifi. using generic postscript or pcl printer.
tail -5 /var/log/cups/error_log

Some progress.

uploaded and scanned cupsd code. Error comes from "colorman.c", talking on dbus, expecting an answer from colord.

So I installed colord, and now get a different error: CreateProfile failed: org.freedesktop.ColorManager.AlreadyExists:profile id 'Brother_DCP-9020CDW-Gray..\
' already exists

3 packages seem to provide colord function (a daemon talking on dbus, storing "color profiles". One is gnome dependend, other is kde dependend, I picked up the third, being xfce. More tests to come. If I dont succeed turnaround would be to run cupsd on a debian vm. Nothing to be proud of!

My problem had nothing to do with color; the error occurred indeed, but was not fatal.
My problem was the fantasy name picked up by cupsd "network printer discovery".
All I had to do was to manually fill connexion: socket://hostname (the printer hostname known locally), rather than let discovered printer name.
