At the start of the Gentoo install, I forgot to modprobe for any SCSI hardware on the box. (modprobe sr_mod, modprobe sd_mod)
I have an HP Pavilion ze1210 with DVD/CDROM/CDR that I would like to make full use of. This is a brand new laptop. Gentoo has so far done fine and at this point I am about to compile the kernel and I understand that in order to use the above devices as they were intended, I need to have SCSI emulation in place.
If I compile the kernel with SCSI emulation will it fix what I failed to do, or did I not need to modprobe for the above to begin with since I have an IDE drive?
Thanks... |

If I understand your question correctly, you are asking whether failing to modprobe for SCSI hardware when you initially booted from the install disk will have any effect on your system after you compile your own kernel.
If this is what you are asking, the answer is no. Don't worry about it. After you compile your own kernel and reboot using it, the kernel on the install CD and the modules you loaded or did not load during the install will be only a distant memory. _________________ For every higher wall, there is a taller ladder |

Thanks,
I appreciate the quick response. This is all somewhat new to me. As a long-time Red Hat user, perhaps I'm not used to the "real" tweaking this distro requires. I will say this much for sure: I am definately learning some things about how Linux really works. I already had complete respect for the various maintainers of Linux, but I really do now, as I see just how much time and effort goes into making something worthwhile like Gentoo. I'm looking forward to getting this system up and running tonight. I'm about to compile my kernel and then move on to a better Linux... Thanks for the help...
