I've successfully installed a few gentoo in my years, and have never experienced this.

http://imgur.com/GHAGdbb

This is also the first time I used genkernel before.

Here is a video of what happens when I boot up.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z5vExYHvLTM

Has anyone ever experienced this? Any idea what could be the problem just based on the video/screenshot?

I am away from the machine now, so I can post emerge --info and kernel config later when I get back there.

genkernel graphics configuration is problematic. it invokes drm and kms without a supporting cast.

if you wish to use kms and open source driver: http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/xorg-config.xml --pretty much good.
if you wish to use the manufacturers drivers: http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/ati-faq.xml --sketchy, can provide additional support.
let us know which route you choose.

with either choice
Code:
emerge linux-firmware
is a good start

Code:
genkernel --menuconfig all
will keep you in the same kernel ballpark but with control

am i supposed to follow those instructions (enable agpgart, Direct Rendering Manager, DRI, ...) even if this machine is going to be a headless server?

i know that with my previous (non genkernel) server installs, i never emerged xorg or used opengl.

i didn't know that genkernel has to use drm, i will enable those features and recompile, and see how it goes. the next time i can go to the office is sunday, and i'll have 4 hours.

i wonder if i should not use genkernel instead? i just used it cause i need initrd for booting into a root filesystem that is a raid5 array.

if you don't want X and don't want KMS you don't have to do any of that
disable drm and kms
keep --- /dev/agpgart (AGP Support)
<*> AMD Opteron/Athlon64 on-CPU GART support
< > Intel 440LX/BX/GX, I8xx and E7x05 chipset support
< > SiS chipset support
< > VIA chipset support
should get normal terminal behavior for the local install

i already had that enabled.

Code:
--- /dev/agpgart (AGP Support)
<*>   AMD Opteron/Athlon64 on-CPU GART support
<M>   Intel 440LX/BX/GX, I8xx and E7x05 chipset support
<M>   SiS chipset support
<M>   VIA chipset support

i will recompile and give it one last shot before i reinstall and manually configure kernel.
