I got the internet connection working, ping was fine(gentoo.org) and I started "emerge x11-base/xfree", it was running for a few hours and stopped because of the error " make is full"(something like that)?

I ran "df -m" and it showed /var was 100% used up(all 695mb). Is there any way I can fix it? :o

The short answer: remove unwanted stuff in /var/tmp/portage left there due to failed and aborted ebuilds.

The long answer: make /var a lot bigger, because it's a scratch partition for compilation. If you don't want to repartition things or move stuff around, consider a symlink from /usr/var to /var if /usr has more space.

from Gentoo Linux Installation Instruction
Quote:
Note: Portage by default uses /var/tmp during package building, often using several hundred megabytes of temporary storage. If you would like to change where Portage stores these temporary files, set a new PORTAGE_TMPDIR before starting the bootstrap process, as follows:

I merged /tmp to /var with parted thus expanded it to 1.3gig and it was fine with xfree. (actually removing /tmp then expanding /var). Thanks rac.
Also, thanks ne0 for pointing that out, which I missed.
