In Gentoo the user builds the kernel config and then the kernel. http://kernel-seeds.org/ is a great place to get a starter configuration and directions for finishing it. genkernel provides an alternate way to build a generic kernel. See http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-amd64.xml?style=printable&full=1#book_part1_chap7 for more.

I got it booting using grub2-efi. But I oddly cannot use nouveau. Prorpietary nvidia work for just one kdm login and no text-console available ....
