I boot the install DVD and it gets up to 42% then the screen goes blank (but monitor is not sleeping).
The light on the DVD drive flashes a few times after that (about once a minute).
The same thing happens on 2 PCs - one has Intel chipset and the other nVidia chipset.
They are both old Core 2 vintage and should be supported by the kernel in Gentoo 10.
The graphics cards are also old.
BTW I have reason to try this old distro: I need gcc version <4.4 to trace some software bugs.

Phoenix5, welcome to Gentoo.
It's obvious you're new, though, as that's binary distro thinking. In Gentoo, you can easily install many, many versions of gcc. As of this writing, we have versions from 2.95 through 4.81 available in Portage (Gentoo's package manager). Furthermore, the Gentoo Linux Installer never reached a level of maturity where it was a reliable install method across a broad spectrum of platforms. I never has a completely successful install with it myself. It's now abandoned and unsupported.
Just use the latest Handbook and the latest install media and you'll be fine.

phoenix5,
The DVD does not provide an installer, its intended as a liveDVD to let you try out Gentoo.
The Gentoo10 DVD did not even usefully support emerge as there was no 'permanent storage' for modifications.
I have a feeling that old gcc also needs old glibc and downgrading glibc is non trivial but it is documented on the forums.
As John R. Graham says, the first thing you need is a working install. _________________ Regards,

Many computers need kernel options specified to boot from a Linux CD. Most common is NOAPIC. Use the F1 key to list options and brief descriptions at the boot prompt. |

I find the graphic framebuffer that comes up by default can be a problem so I always go with the nofb kernel when booting the liveDVD. I also would rather see things go horribly wrong in detail
I seem to recall anything before gcc 3.4 would be a problem in the glibc dept. |

... or the minimalist CD (check out here). That should filter all video-related issues when booting, if there is any issue.
From there you should be able to use lynx to follow the handbook and install everything. _________________ "Nolite arbitrari quia venerim mittere pacem in terram non veni pacem mittere sed gladium" (Yeshua Ha Mashiach) |
