I had installed openssl-1.0.1c and trying to emerge empathy (where this error appeared) pulled 0.9.8x in a different slot.

Decided to build with +gnutls as in this topic https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-955970-start-0.html since it seems to be the same bug and it's been there for a while. Anyway I had gnutls on my system and there's no need to have two instances of openssl just for empathy.
