|
|
Hi friends,
Is it possible to spawn a login shell before the whole start-up is finished?
I want to give username password while the boot finishes in the background
My ~/.bash_profile contains startx, so I have dependecies to think about

McC0dy,
Welcome to gentoo.
Please describe your problem rather than your perceived solution.
If I was doing what I think you want to do, I would use a graphical login manager of some sort and run it from the startup sequence by adding xdm to the default runlevel. _________________ Regards,

Hi Neddy, thank you. it's good to be here.
I think you got me back on track - I'll try out setting up xdm with something minimalistic. |

SLiM is a very ... slim graphical login manager. _________________

Thanks for the tip, Naib. I tried it out and it looks nice, but it crashes if I try to start it before default runlevel.
I guess my problem is not related to SLiM but rather xdm. I wouldn't mind having something as simple as agetty or getty - as long as it can start during boot.
Any advice on starting agetty that early? |

Actually, what you're attempting will cause problems. The default runlevel is the first place where the OS is really up enough enough to support a login. I'd say this isn't something that would end well or, if you got it working, would not work reliably over time.

I see. That's bad news though
I'm going to stick with SLiM or agetty for now - haven't decided yet.
Thank you guys very much! |
