Hello everyone,

I am having trouble with kdm and X server. However, I am still able to access kdm as root by typing in "kdm". I am using fluxbox to hold me over. X server would be nice but is not necessary because kdm is at runlevel 5, which it boots into it automatically. I am able to access kdm and the login, however when I try to login, it flashes on my screen, then it loads again back to square one where I came from. I tried to get it working, but it isn't happening where I am able to login to kde. I attempted to reinstall, but this just keeps happening. Let me know what I can do to fix this so that I can help you help me.

All help will be greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,

donald3.heckel

donald3.heckel,

Xorg draws the images from KDE. Unless you want to run KDE on one system and display the images on another, you need Xorg on the system running KDE.

As you can get to the KDM login screen, it sounds like Xorg works, this is run as root. When you log in, the X server is restarted as the logged in user.
Please post /var/log/Xorg.0.log after a failed login.

You will need to do Ctrl-Alt-F3 to switch to a free virtual terminal, log in, then use wgetpaste to put the log on the web

donald3.heckel,

Is your normal user in the video group ?
Log in as your normal user and use the groups command.

From your log, I would suspect the kernel setup but you say it works for root, so its not that.
It may be useful to see a good /var/log/Xorg.0.log too, when you run kdm as root.
This will confirm what should be happening.

Hello,

I believe the same problem persists. What keeps happening is that kdm has this "blinking" bar at the top left corner of the screen with nothing happening. I am trying to do everything I can. The command "startkde" does not work either. It keeps saying how it is unable to connect to the X server or $Display is not set properly. Please reply back to me as soon as you can.

All Help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

donald3.heckel

donald3.heckel,

Lets do some elementary testing - maybe your kernel is broken after all.

Code:
emerge -1 twm xterm xclock
this install a nice small simple window manager and a few programs for it to run.
If you have a ~/.xinitrc file, rename it to ~/.xinitrc_broken, so that Xorg can't find it.

Now run startx. You should see three xterms and an analogue clock. If you do, the problem is with KDE somewhere, if not, its Xorg or your kernel. Having halved the problem space, we can close in on the problem.

Post your new /var/log/Xorg.0.log regardless

Hello,

Thanks for the reply.

The same issue persists. Here is my link to my Xorg log file listed below:

donald3.heckel,

Thats good. Nothing changed, so its Xorg or your kernel. We can eliminate KDE from the investigation now.

How did you make your kernel and what support did you add for your Intel graphics chip?
Did you include any framebuffer drivers?

Please post your lspci output, it will be useful to see what its says about your graphics card(s).

Hello,

By the way, I made my kernel with the DEVTMPFS support particularly for grub to work as well as the necessary components for support with the ext4 filesystems and the necessary modules for my wifi adapter (Which I am having trouble getting working with wlan0) as well as the necessary modules for my graphics drivers. Note that in my make.conf, I have the flag set:
Code:
VIDEO_CARDS="intel"
so that I may have the proper support for my Intel video cards. I tried reinstalling xorg with no success. I thought that I would patch things up a little bit with genkernel to attempt a fix. No issues occurred with the kernel. On the other hand, I am pretty sure it is most likely my X.org server. I also added my user to every group I saw and made a small amount of progress for the better. Then I tried kdm with the same issue as well as startx with it not working just as it was before. I am pretty sure that something may be wrong with the X.org install and I don't know it. Lastly for your lspci information, I have made a documents directory and put an lspcioutput.txt file there by typing in at the documents directory with the command:
Code:
lspci >> lspcioutput.txt
I then went and wgetpasted it to this URL for viewing: http://bpaste.net/raw/99936. I hope you find this useful. Thanks for everything. The issue however is still persisting with the xorg log file by the way.

All help will be greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,

donald3.heckel

donald3.heckel,

You can use genkernel if you want to but you must use the menuconfig option to add support for your graphics.
genkernel all leaves it out.

You need
Code:
<*> /dev/agpgart (AGP Support)
<*>   Intel 440LX/BX/GX, I8xx and E7x05 chipset support

<*> Direct Rendering Manager (XFree86 4.1.0 and higher DRI support)
<M> Intel GMA5/600 KMS Framebuffer
 [*]   Intel GMA600 support (Experimental)

<*> Framebuffer Console support
[*]   Map the console to the primary display device

<*> Support for frame buffer devices  --->
*** Frame buffer hardware drivers ***
Everything Under the Frame buffer hardware drivers must be off.

How does you kernel match up ?
Fix it, rebuild your kernel, install you new kernel and boot into it.
Then check the date and time in
Code:
uname -a
thats the buidl date/time of the running kernel. It will confirm that you are running the kernel you think you are. If that checks out, what does startx do now?

Hello,

when configuring the kernel, I added everything I needed including framebuffering. There should be nothing wrong with the kernel as startx continued to not work.

startx has the same output of that same log file.

All help will be greatly appreciated.

donald3.heckel,

Make friends with wgetpaste and use it to put your /usr/src/linux/.config on a pastebin site. Tell us the URL it returns.
Post the output of
Code:
uname -a
too.

On the face of it thats worrying, as you must not add framebuffering ... but it may be a nuance of the English language.

I think the problem is with the kernel as Xorg is doing everything expected of it, until it dies.

As a workaround, you could
Code:
emerge -1 xf86-video-vesa
as that driver should work for you too. It will just be slow.
You will need a simple xorg.conf to tell Xorg to use vesa, rather than intel.
Put the following into /etc/X11/xorg.conf
Code:
Section "Device"
    Identifier "vesa driver"
    Driver "vesa"
EndSection
This is not a fix, its a get Xorg working while we fix it properly, stopgap.

Hello,

KDM is working but with a few snags. I somehow made it start up automatically but when I rebooted, at the login screen, the keyboard is not working, however the mouse was the only thing that worked. When I typed in startx before that, I started the desktop and the mouse worked but not the keyboard. I tried a usb keyboard, yet that did not work either. I can still access my system indirectly with a live cd.

All help will be greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,

donald3.heckel

donald3.heckel,

What did you do?
I don't know what has changed on your system.

Please post your emerge --info output and your kernel .config file that I asked for before.

I managed to boot into the live cd and fix the issue with automatic startup. The keyboard still is not working.

All help will be greatly appreciated.

I did this by rc-update del xdm default and did the same thing for the boot runlevel.

Sincerely,

donald3.heckel

Keyboard problem solved. I went into my make.conf and I changed my input devices to "evdev synaptics" and emerged x11-base/xorg-drivers. It worked great.

I will return soon to post the output of my emerge --info and .config command.

Sincerely,

donald3.heckel,

Is this with the vesa driver I suggested as a get you going measure ?

If so, we now know that Xorg is OK too, since it works with the vesa driver. That only leaves the kernel.

Hello, I have a slight observation.

The vesa drivers were a great get me going start. My wireless is not working for some strange reason. However, could the point be the KMS support in my kernel for the intel drivers? I do not have this enabled.

donald3.heckel,

Yes. KMS is essential for the intel driver.

Your wireless is a separate and unrelated problem. Fix one thing at a time.

Hello,

I enabled the KMS Support in my kernel for intel drivers. I then tested it by taking a risk and removing the xorg.conf file. The intel drivers started working and I have successfully booted into my system with the intel drivers. My Opera browser then shows the screen normally instead of zoomed in.

THANK YOU ALL FOR THE EFFORT AND THE HELP.

My intel drivers are functioning normally and without issue.

All help was greatly appreciated and I am very appreciative of the help you all have given me.

Sincerely,

donald3.heckel

donald3.heckel,

I'm please its working. Renaming xorg.conf would have worked, just in case you wanted it back later.

Helping is my way of giving back to Gentoo. I came to the forums about 10 years ago, and helped others while I was waiting for help myself.
Its not true I'm still waiting for my first post to be answered :) but I've never gone away.
