Text Editor Recommendation

I don't mean to start a text editor holy war here:
What's a good gnome text editor that is

Also, what features should I look for in a text editor?
I've been a jedit user, and it's great, I'm just wondering if there's a good gnome application out there
By the way, I'm using this to also edit php and html in addition to java, is there a good html editor that I should use, and if so, why (over the text editor)

i don't know if you've tried gedit (comes with gnome, under accessories)
i find it a nice simple text editor and i use it a lot for simple stuff.

If i do php i usually use gedit or bluefish
if i do java i usually use eclipse

Gedit: In windows, the files are terminated in UNIX style, is there a way to change that?
Also, CSS and PHP aren't highlightable style :-(

What makes bluefish good (better for php than gedit)? When I used it I couldn't stand the fact that to indent a block there was no shift + tab (it's control plus .)

For java, eclipse I understand :-)

for php amd html i use Quanta 3.2 beta2.
i never tryed bluefish, i´ll will compile it when i get home.

It's a beautiful editor. It really rocks, and needs more publicity (than it already gets at least)

I find SciTE to be faster than gEdit. It has a toggle-able toolbar and status bar, you can compile/make from within it, it has folding, did I mention fast?

See for yourself

Fully detachable menus, erm, speed, functionality.. etc...

gEdit could barely be described as a code editor.. it has no syntax highlighting unless through a plugin as far as I know. It has nowhere near as many features as SciTE.

It is only a small tarball, emerge it, see for yourself

Gedit does have syntax highlighting, but not for all the languages I want, and I'm not sure there are plugins for more languages. When you say "you can compile/make from within sciTE", does that mean you can bring up a command prompt (like in Kate, a text editor I really like, but it's not gnome), or not.
Also, what is folding?

Folding is when each bit of indented text can be folded in, so you can get a good outline of the code easily.

You can see the + / - in the screenshot?

SciTE can do syntax highlighting on:

Kind of, just without the tabs

Try choosing View --> Toolbar and turning that on. The two buttons on the far right scroll between buffers. Try opening one file, then another, and using those two buttons to switch between the two buffers..

Hmm, I see. That does work, but I think it's nicer to be able to see all your open documents and click on the one you need. Oh well, maybe next version :-)

SciTE is really great.
Powerful and flexible enough so that I use it for all of my coding.
Still small and fast enough so that I can use it for any text editing.

To have tabs in SciTE, just edit your ~/.SciTEUser.properties so

tabbar.visible=1
tabbar.hide.one=0

Further, whenever I exit and return none of my options do not appear to be saved (view line numbers, toolbars, etc)

In sciTE: When opening up a document that ends with html, html is syntax highlighted, but how do I turn on html highlighting for a file not ending in html (It's not in my list of languages in sciTE)
Also, is there a way to show tabs but not spaces (of the show whitespaces preference?)

Yeah, (g)Vim certainly fits your requirements. Take a look at the scripts at www.vim.org to get some nice html editing features.
