I am completing my migration from windows, I was using using applian's replay media capture to automatically capture my streamed videos
is there asimilar application in gentoo, I mainly need to automatically capture streamed videos(no manual intervention), and gui is preferred if that is possible of course

thanks

I am not sure about 'automatic' capturing, but manual is:
media-video/recordmydesktop (CLI)
media-video/qt-recordmydesktop (GUI)
media-video/gtk-recordmydesktop (GUI)

Also you can try
media-video/ffmpeg (CLI)

if applian's replay media catcher is exactly what you are looking for, It can run under Linux thanks to Wine : http://voices.yahoo.com/how-replay-media-catcher-linux-using-wine-2690806.html

Actually you don't need any proprietary software in Linux. You can record whatever you want at the screen using native open source tools. Except you'll have to configure it manually. The experience we have. Do not hesitate to ask :)

Recording streaming media by capturing the screen and re-encoding it sounds like a horrible solution.

Not that I've ever done it, but I thought VLC has the ability to capture and save/record streaming video?

http://wiki.videolan.org/Documentation:Streaming_HowTo/Receive_and_Save_a_Stream

EDIT: Yep, just tried VLC with a URL of a YouTube video and it worked. Did it all via the VLC GUI and saved the streamed video to a .mp4 file.
