Mplayer is trying to open an audio device that doesn't exist or is configured improperly. Do you have a file called ~/.mplayer/config and if you do, does it contain a line that starts with ao=? If not - do you have a file ~/.asoundrc and/or /etc/asound.conf?
Are you using pulseaudio? Try if any of these work: mplayer -ao alsa myfile.mp3; or mplayer -ao alsa:device=card0 myfile.mp3; or mplayer -ao pulse myfile.mp3.
