As the title states, GDM loads up perfectly, i type in my name and password, and the screen just hangs
I found a work around byy opening another terminal and killing the X process, then the GDM screen comes back up automatically and I am able to login as I normally should

thanks

solved by adding policykit to the default level
'rc-update add policykit default'

Have you checked alt-f12 for messages or checked any logs? The two that would be worth looking at are /var/log/Xorg.0.log and /var/log/messages

xinitrc:
export XDG_MENU_PREFIX=gnome-
exec gnome-session

I don't have a /var/log/messages, I guess I didn't install the logger for it
I'll check the xorg log and f12 next time

Nevermind on the xinitrc...looks like if you're using GDM you just have to edit the /etc/conf.d/xdm file.

add:
Code:
DISPLAYMANAGER="gdm"

Maybe try commenting out what you have in ~/.xinitrc

didn't work either :D
It got fixed though when I added console kit using rc-update to the default level.
Im not sure I understand but I'm guessing the unprivileged user had permission problems when accessing some configuration file?
it would be great if someone explains.

thanks for your help everyone

ConsoleKit is a framework for defining and tracking users, login sessions, and seats. http://www.freedesktop.org/wiki/Software/ConsoleKit

rather important so GDM didn't know how to proceed without it. My guess is that it was being started with GDM as part of a sanity check or something after you killed X.
