i cannot solve that issue whole day, i was recompiling kernel 5 times and cant find the problem
can you help me with this.
"cannot open root device sda6 or unknown_block(0,0): error -6
kernel panic VFS: unable to mount rootfs on unknown_block (0,0)"
my grub configuration is OK
last time i recompiled kernel i was enable ATA/ATAPI/MFM/RLL which is DEPRECATED, that doesnt help me.
can i disable that option, i use sata disk and cdrom ?
her is my kernel .conf:
http://bpaste.net/show/83942/
thank you

#
# CONFIG_BLK_DEV_GENERIC is not set
from bpaste, but i cant find BLK_DEV_GENERIC in my kernel, when i search it it doesnt find
can that line be a problem ? and if it so, where is that line ? |

if you need help with kernel, you should gave lspci -k output
the general troubleshooting part for root unable... message is that if the sd message with partition appears, it's just a boot param issue, looking at grub there.
if not, then it's a controller driver issue.
the question is then, do you see partition/drive infos after the failure message? |

thanks for replay
after first error massage:
Code: | cannot open root device or unknown_block(0,0): error -6 |
it try to list partitions, but comes another massage:
Code: | kernel panic VFS: unable to mount rootfs on unknown_block (0,0)" |
and disk and partitions isnt listed and i cant see infos
i was find my old kernel.conf on pastebin, which was worked well
only difference between that two .config is in:

Guessing that if you ran lspci -k from the cd and posted the output, that it wouold show an intel motherboard chipset. If so the menuconfig below should provide a working kernel

thank you for that
it worked
i was just enable:
[*] ATA BMDMA support
<*> Intel ESB, ICH, PIIX3, PIIX4 PATA/SATA support
dont know will it be worked if i wasnt enable INTEL.....
does it mean i dont have AHCI enabled in bios ? i cant find it there
if it means that, can i disable:
<*> AHCI SATA support
i was recompile it several times, and i remeber that one time i was enabled that two lines an it wasnt work... now it worked well |

I would guess that <*> AHCI SATA support can be diabled if ahci is not a bios option.
option for raid and one or two other modes should be findable
recommend when doing kernel upgrade: copy .config from existing working kernel source directory to the new kernel source directory and run to import old settings into new structure. make oldconfig will highlight new menu items and honor new dependencies. Not required, but then run and check it out. _________________ Defund the FCC. |
