No OpenRC messages on start

Hi,

all my Gentoo systems will show OpenRC messages on boot like

But one of my systems only show

I really have no clue what is causing this. Where I should look...

compare /etc/rc.conf between the systems.

I don't think it's OpenRC. The first non-kernel messages in the first listing are from the initramfs, and they don't appear in the second listing. So whatever changed starts in the initramfs. I suspect you generated the initramfs with genkernel; I've no useful experience with that, but some initramfs scripts for Gentoo (in the wikis for example) include a line to stop output to the console. I didn't copy that line into my own script, as I like something to read while waiting for the system to boot :-)

. Maybe your script has such a line, and forgets to re-enable output.

Hi,

problem solved: The system has got a serial console configured. The init process will only output to the first console (source). Because of the order (console=tty0 console=ttyS0...), the missing output was only shown on the serial console.

Bonus question:
Can I tell init to show it on both consoles?
