Survey of 7,698 respondents:

http://constantmayhem.com/ty-stuff/linuxsurvey/2013.html

Basically, Gentoo seems to have been in the 6th & 7th place.

I'm surprised people use Gentoo mostly in server environments more than desktop... Is that the case for people who frequent f.g.o too?

I don't think I participated in the survey but I use Gentoo for pretty much all my frequently used machines. The machines I don't use often tend to be too slow for compiling and hence I do not run Gentoo on them... The only exception for something I use often but has issues with Gentoo: Maemo.

I've been using Gentoo primarily for servers for the last decade, especially low wattage servers were I can cross compile on a faster machine and use distributed compiling to handle the heavy loads, finally decided to try and break the Windows habit and use it on a Dell laptop. Here's where I weigh in:

    personal laptop: 1
    servers: 7

I started using Gentoo on my servers then quickly switched to using it on the desktop and haven't looked back ever since. You will find that Gentoo is used more in server environment than on a desktop since not everyone is able to follow directions (handbook) or care to maintain their packages (emerge).

You can cross compile, use distcc or just compile from a beefy system then rsync changes.

Actually, why would one even run Gentoo(or any other OS) on a computer that I wouldn't use for any other reason, that's the problem...
Because Gentoo requires quite a bit of effort to update, especially if crosscompile or rsync is needed, I don't run it on slower machines.
