Currently, I run Gentoo on three machines: a HP t5745 thin client, a MSI S270 laptop, and a VirtualBox VM. To save bandwidth, the three installations share a common /usr/portage and I was wondering about something similar for the kernel source. The three machines have distinct .configs though. Presumably the 'safe' way to handle that is, when new kernel source is emerged, to cpio -pdlum the source once for each machine, before writing the .config for each. That achieves common source but entirely separate builds.

Does the kernel source support multiple builds without intervening make distcleans ?

Use the output dir feature:

Code:
# make help | grep output
make O=dir [targets] Locate all output files in "dir", including .config
