Hi, what tools are there is the standard portage tree for streaming music? Ideally, I'd like to be able to stream from my Android phone and tablet. My brother uses Subsonic but you have to pay for that. Anyone have any experience here with streaming?

You mean, stream to those devices, right? There's net-misc/icecast, and probably several others.

Uh, I guess so. I wasn't sure which preposition to use to be honest...
I'll check that out, thanks.

The server-side of Subsonic is free, and there are alternatives to the subsonic client like Perisonic (haven't tried it extensively myself):

Is it? I thought there was some license fee to stream content for more than 30 days or something... Maybe they did away with that. I'll try the perisonic thing. Actually, I think the subsonic Android client is hard to use and the grooveshark one is even worse! I wish it was possible to use the Google Music app to stream directly from one's personal server. Even though it's not perfect, it it pretty solid on the streaming side of things...

Isn't it free with adds, but for the server side thing this is not so intrusive.
However, I am also still looking for the 'perfect' audio backend server that might include editing tags , organising music , next to streaming to android devices and allowing me to play the music on various devices in the house (like with MPD), preferably from one "backend service".
Basically now I just let more than one serverside-service access the same music directory to get all the wanted functionality, but of course in that way I cant use the same playlists etc...
EDIT/PS: There used to be Ampache which has similar funcionality, but I think it is no longer maintained. Might still work though.
EDIT Two: I now realise ( years later) that indeed the server side is only partially free: You need to upgrade for some features. |
