[/b]First time installing Gentoo. Minimal, AMD64.
Up to here: http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-amd64.xml?part=1&chap=7
7.d. Alternative: Using genkernel

On the handbook and now I'm stuck.
emerging genkernel doesn't want to work and I have no idea why.

>>> Failed to emerge app-arch/cpio-2.11, Log file:

>>> 'var/tmp/portage/app-arch/cpio-2.11/temp/build.log

*Messages for package app-arch/cpio-2.11:

* ERROR: app-arch/cpio-2.11 failed (compile phase):
* emake failed

* Call Stack:
* ebuild.sh, line 93: called src_compile
* environment, line 1999: called __eapi2_src_compile
* phase-helpers.sh, line 612: called dir
* The specific snippet of code:
* emake I I die "emake failed"

Please help, I've been trying to fix this for the past 3 hours. I've googled and googled and everybody elses problems are caused in the configuration phase, not the compile phase.

I am afraid this does not tell us much. Can you post more of the output? The error is farther up. The relevant lines should be present at /var/tmp/portage/app-arch/cpio-2.11/temp/build.log. An easy way to get that information here is to emerge wgetpaste and then use wgetpaste /var/tmp/portage/app-arch/cpio-2.11/temp/build.log

Don't worry. We all where new at some point. I believe you have a typo in your make.conf. You should have set -j5 but it looks like you may have put j-5 instead.

EDIT: These are the lines that tipped me off

make j-5
make: *** No rule to make target `j-5'. Stop.

Ah jeez, I swear I checked there.
I can't believe one little spelling mistake did that.
Sorry to waste your time and thank you so much!

Wow, I saw that as well and that's why I checked there. I missed it. Thanks again!
