if I emerge -uDav world the system wants to rebuild
udev-197-r4 repeatedly and throws the messages
copied below.
I'm at a loss why it wants to move to masked version
of virtual/udev ...

# emerge -p -1 virtual/udev

| Or do you have Gentoo+stable with lots of keywords? |

not sure what you're getting at
after going through your procedure, system rebuilt
virtual/udev-197
then emerge -uDav world wants to rebuild virtual/udev-197
with all the messages in my first post ... _________________ .... there is nothing - absolutely nothing - half so much worth

Uuups, I didn't understand your problem ...
But use N
emerge -uDNav world
and depclean before
emerge --depclean
perhaps first just
emerge -auvDN system |

Rebuilding world is an answer just not sure it's the answer
Add the "-t" flag to "emerge -uDav" and see if it shows what is driving the change/reemerge. _________________ PRIME x570-pro, 3700x, 6.1 zen kernel

... gave in and unmasked udev and virtual/udev
system is now happy (me not so much )
my other gentoo computer (amd64 instead of x86 but otherwise pretty
much identically configured is happy with stable udev / virtual/udev) _________________ .... there is nothing - absolutely nothing - half so much worth
