Guys I know that I'm a n00b but could you please explain me how to solve all the problems related to blocked packages?
I can't troubleshoot anything... :(

Handbook Part B Section 1.e subheading Blocked Packages covers this. http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-amd64.xml?style=printable&full=1#book_part2_chap1 Basically, use unmerge or /etc/portage/package.mask or USE flags to eliminate one or the other package. After the emerge succeeds one may find that the package that was left out can be emerged if the problem was caused by versions or USE flags.

GSnake,

Post your specific example of blocked packages.

What you need to do varies with the package(s) involved. If a package needs to be removed, you may need to install the replacement before your box is bootable again.

It may be possible to solve this problem by using package.mask to
prevent one of those packages from being selected. However, it is also
possible that conflicting dependencies exist such that they are
impossible to satisfy simultaneously.  If such a conflict exists in
the dependencies of two different packages, then those packages can
not be installed simultaneously.

GSnake,

Lets take your first blocker
[blocks B ] <x11-misc/colord-0.1.22 ("<x11-misc/colord-0.1.22" is blocking x11-libs/colord-gtk-0.1.24)
That says that <x11-misc/colord-0.1.22 (notice the version) is blocking x11-libs/colord-gtk-0.1.24
As it has a less than (<) the implication is that they block would vanish if you had a newer x11-misc/colord.
Unfortunately, newer versions are in testing.

You can keyword x11-misc/colord to get a newer version. However, it may depend on other testing packages.

As you seem be be updating to testing Gnome 3 on an otherwise stable system, you should remove gnome-extra/zenity-2.32 and gnome-base/gdm-2.91.94. They are both part of Gnome 2 and you can't have both Gnome 2 and Gnome 3 at the same same time. This will break Gnome 2.

You also have lots of slot conflicts. This is a feature of mixing and matching stable and testing. The above may help with them.

You may want to try a larger value of
the --backtrack option, such as --backtrack=30, in order to see if
that will solve this conflict automatically.

For more information, see MASKED PACKAGES section in the emerge man
page or refer to the Gentoo Handbook.

giulio@Giuntoo ~ $ sudo emerge eudev
Calculating dependencies... done!

- sys-fs/eudev-9999::gentoo (masked by: missing keyword)
- sys-fs/eudev-1_beta2-r1::gentoo (masked by: ~amd64 keyword)

For more information, see the MASKED PACKAGES section in the emerge
man page or refer to the Gentoo Handbook.

What is happening and what should I do to solve this?

Thank you and sorry for my inexperience.

GSnake,

You should mask sys-fs/eudev by adding it to your /etc/portage/package.mask file.
sys-fs/eudev is not yet ready for stable systems, so you should not allow it on your system yet.

http://packages.gentoo.org/package/x11-libs/gtk+
x11-libs/gtk+-3.6.3-r2 is hardmasked and keyworded
x11-libs/gtk+-3.4.4 is the current stable version
x11-libs/gtk+-3.5 is not in portage which used to mean that <x11-libs/gtk+-3.5 would not compute

I would try
add
Quote:
=x11-libs/gtk+-3.6.3-r2 ~amd64
to /etc/.portage/package.keywords
add
Quote:
=x11-libs/gtk+-3.6.3-r2
to /etc/.portage/package.unmask
Code:
emerge --unmerge gnome-themes-standard gtk+
emerge  gtk+
emerge -uND world

I thank you guys but what does it mean "masked"? Why I put "tilde"amd64? Why I should add *object* to *file*.use/mask/ecc?

Why does my emerge -DuNav fail?

GSnake,

~ as in ~amd64 or more generally, ~arch means testing package for that arch
You use this to mix testing packages, into an otherwise stable system.
Mixing stable packages into an otherwise testing system is also supported.

The files in /etc/portage provide per package control of what is installed and how. Entries in make.conf apply to all packages.
Read
Code:
man portage
it explains all about these files.

masked means portage will not recognize that the masked package version or range of package versions exists when calculating what to emerge.
~amd64 means that portage should consider unstable/testing amd64 versions in calculating what to emerge. If you are on some other architecture the ~ would precede that arch's stable keyword to allow use of unstable/testing versions.
add to package.mask so portage will not emerge that version, range of versions, or any version
add to package.unmask so portage can emerge a package that exists but masked by the developers
add to package.keywords to allow or prevent use of a package that is an exception to the global keyword
add to package.use to allow a package to be built as an exception to the global use flags
emerge -uNDav world is not working because you are trying to put two different versions of gtk+-3 into slot 3

if you are going to continue to attempt to use packages not yet released by the developers to stable branch you will need to first study Working with portage and working with gentoo from the handbook and then follow with significant study of the developer's documentation

Thank you guys.. really! I'm learning a lot of things thanks to Gentoo!

My last question: I understood that now I'm mixing testing with stable packages so... how can I make my box totally use stable packages only?

GSnake,

Remove your package.keywords file/directory but be careful.
There are a few packages that must not be downgraded, at least, its not easy.

Rename package.keywords file/directory, so it cannot be found then
Code:
emerge -uDNpv @world
and see what portage wants to downgrade.
Do not allow glibc to be downgraded.

I've got no package.keywords but package.accept_keywords.

By doing emerge -DuNav world (why should I use @? What's that for?) I get:
Code:
sudo emerge -DuNav world

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

package.keywords and package.accept_keywords do the same thing and can coexist, at least for now. @world and world do the same thing and can coexist, at least for now. pointless change for change's sake so far.
run
Code:
emerge -s portage
if the installed version predates 2.1.11.31 run
Code:
 emerge portage

add
Quote:
gnome-base/gvfs udisks
to /etc/portage/package.use and retry the emerge

I followed your suggestions and I also unmerged eudev.

Now if I try to -DuNav this is what I get, is it safe to upgrade? I noticed that there are a lot of "D"s (which I think means Downgrade) so I'm turning my system to a stable one... right? (package.accept_keywords deleted).

Code:
emerge -DuNav world

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Quitting.

EDIT2: Should I keep a stable or a testing box?
If in package.accept_keywords I have =*programhere*-*versionhere* tildeamd64 does that mean that I'll have the testing package ONLY for that version? In a similar way if I put > / < / >= / <= I'll have testing version only for > < <= >= version of that software? And, finally, if I don't put anything at all (*programhere*), I'll always have the testing version.. right?

EDIT3: What is a global keyword?

GSnake,

In answer to Edit 2 - yes.
Its a lot less trouble to maintain either an all stable or all testing system as you get fewer slot collisions.
An all testing system has its own challenges. Its testing, it doesn't always work. Now and again, you get a nasty surprise because something gets into testing that isn't documented.
You can mitigate the surprises and breakages:-
1) never update just before you 'must have' a working system
2) set FEATURES=buildpkg. This keeps binary tarballs of everything you build. After a while, this gives you the ability to revert to old versions quickly. Read about emerge -K

A global keyword affects all packages.
Its given in ACCEPT_KEYWORDS in make.conf. If you don't set it, its inherited from your profile as stable for your arch. Look in
Code:
emerge --info
to see all of your global settings.

Perfect! Thanks!

Last question: keyword "amd64" means STABLE amd64 architecture. tilde-amd64 means TESTING amd64 right?
