| I am new to the forums and Gentoo. During my installation I came to the USE variables section (Configuring Portage) and I REALLY don't know what to do.. I mean, I understand what USE variables do I just don't know when or where to use which variables... If anyone can shed some light on this I would highly appreciate it, thanks! |

Welcome!
There is no dire need to set any USE flags. A reasonable set of USE flags is already set for you by profile. Just make sure you choose the profile that suits you best. USE flags can be also changed later in case you change your mind.

| I also saw a 10.0 and 13.0 version(s) of the profile(s), what are the differences? Also, where are the USE variables stored for each profile so I can check them? |

Easiest is to switch to the profile you are interested in and run emerge --info. |

I prefer using
| Code: | | eselect profile list |
for viewing and
| Code: | | eselect profile set [No.] |
for setting a different profile.

I generally only set a few USE flags, for things I absolutely do not want, in other words negative USE flags, and then a few positive ones. The more you use Gentoo, the more it will make sense to you. For a first installation it doesn't really matter.
