I can't play movies from a samba share with totem for some reason. I get this error message:

Quote:
$ totem smb://server/path/file.avi

** Message: Error: A SMB protocol source plugin is required to play this stream, but not installed.
gstplaybasebin.c(1668): gen_source_element (): /play:
No URI handler for smb

** Message: Missing plugin: gstreamer|0.10|totem|SMB protocol source|urisource-smb (SMB protocol source)
** Message: Automatic missing codec installation not supported (helper script missing)

I can see the file with nautilus though. When I open the file in nautilus with totem I get a window with the error message:

Quote:
An error occurred

The playback of this movie requires a SMB protocol source plugin which is not installed.

Where do I get this plugin from? None of the gst-plugins-* seem to fit here.

maybe you should re-emerge gvfs with USE="samba" ?
i had a similar problem with nautilus...

i hope this helps...

edit: don`t forget to re-emerge totem, or run revdep-rebuild :P

makism: Reemerging gvfs with USE="samba" didn't help. I have also run revdep-rebuild to make sure, but still nothing.

Paczesiowa: I have emerged fusesmb, but how do I use it now? I still can't play a movie from a samba share.

Ok, that works. Of course it would be nice to be able to do that by clicking on the movie file in nautilus, but hey, at least I have one working solution now :)

well I don't use gnome, but I'm sure you can alias /mnt/samba/MSHOME/ with name Network and some nice icon and put it in place where regular smb network link is in gnome and click the hell out of that movie

I re-emerged totem and gvfs with these USE flags:

Code:

media-video/totem bluetooth galago tracker youtube
gnome-base/gvfs archive cdda fuse gphoto2 http iphone samba udev

But then what I think really made it work for me was emerging media-plugins/gst-plugins-gnomevfs.

This made it work for me but it seems to freeze up a little now and then and then restart in a momemt or two.

For late readers and searchers: gst-plugins-gnomevfs is deprecated, use gst-plugins-gio, with gnome-base/gvfs installed with appropriate USE flags to get remote access over appropriate methods

Is there any solution for gst-1.0 of gnome-3.6?
