The Sad, Probably Inevitable End of the 5-Set Tennis Match
Or they could not be stupid and create a "Senior" / "Champions" tour.

I think it has more to do with the dwindling attention span of spectators of sport in general.

Shorter games, flashier graphics spewing graphs of statistics, commentators filling every second with the sound of their voice, and when they pop up a static graphic they have to pipe in music so thick people don't think their TV is borked.

And just as something exciting is happening in a field sport, "we'll be right back after we try to sell you shit you don't need".

Possibly. According to the article, it seems to be about money. Best of 3 allows for more longevity, which really translates to more profit. The article also points out the significant contribution best of 5 has made to the sport. Best of 3 would really change the sport, and it would take away most of the appeal. Maybe best of 3 through the quarters wouldn't be horrible. That would "save" some of the weaker players from using up their waning talent too early.

Tennis can be modernized. BoneKracker tennis is played on two adjacent courts, with one player from each of three teams on every side. Two sides are all male, one side is scantily clad female, and the fourth is LBGTQQAWTF. The players compete to hit the ball, and can hit it across the net or onto the adjacent side. Contact is encouraged, an mixed martial arts rules apply. Each player must consume a full pint of ale between each game.

Naked tennis. :) But no admission for saggy US Americans. We don't want to see a disgusted audience.

@pjp: There's no exclusion of the handicapped. They are more than welcome to play. They just lose very quickly and get humiliated. It's the natural order of things. Also, it's modernized in that it makes for a good reality TV show.

I wasn't serious about the bigot comment. My apologies for it not being more apparent.

It was accurate. I was only joking, though.

On a related note, Djokovic won, made better (it seems, didn't get to watch) by more than 3 sets.

Amusingly during play, Mary Carillo said "with all the service breaks, this is more like women's tennis."

Britain's Andy Murray defeated Spain's David Ferrer 2-6 6-4 7-6 in a grueling and enthralling Sony Open final on Sunday to move above Roger Federer to second in the world rankings.

lol, grueling 3 sets.

tennis is incredible - boring. And nothing they will do can change that. Not even mandatory naked female players. Especially not naked Williams sisters. Ok, that would not be boring but horrifying but... again, no reason to watch that crap.

Watching grass grow on the other hand is really exciting. At least compared to tennis.

What do you think of Ping-Pong (i.e., "table tennis")?

not as boring - at least something is happening. And the points system is sane. Still, if I had to choose between say table tennis and (women) volleyball. Give me volleyball. Tennis and rhythmic gymnastics? Gymnastics please. Tennis and curling? Curling every single time. Even bowls is less boring than Tennis. BOWLS!
