I always use the latest Portage alpha, curious to figure out what's new and what's improved. Seems to me that the newest feature is integrating the rebuilding function in the emerge command. Meaning: when a package update would break other installed packages, these are automatically included in the merge list and marked with a red, lowercase "r".
Am I right? Couldn't find anything about it in man emerge. |

That is a feature of an EAPI = 5 ebuild which adds subslot capabilities to slot. That subslot is used to describe an ABI for a lib, so when the subslot changes it triggers an automatic rebuild of the affected pkgs depending on that lib.
It is also in stable portage. Look forward to more and more libs migrating to using the subslot as they are upgraded to EAPI 5 which will most often wait until a version bump of that lib.
Yes, it will eventually replace the day to day need for revdep-rebuild, putting revdep being used for backup only, rarely needed or used. _________________ Brian
