|
|
Apparently the new udev will no longer use eth0 as the default device name,
but for whichever device loads first. The recommendation is that a fixed
naming scheme uses anything _but_ eth0 (or wlan0) as the default, to avoid
clashes with kernel names.
Running "grep -R eth0 *" on /etc/ I get 140 hits, of which 10 seem to be actively
configuring software. This implies a fair amount of editing for the changeover,
with future installs having no idea what the default network name will be.
Does anyone have any idea what the new default network name to replace
etho might be, or will it be necessary to parse eg. ifconfig output to find it?

Thanks for the reference, which I hadn't found. So it seems that eno0 is the new eth0;
or possibly abcd1234; or possibly anything at all except the deprecated eth0. Still, if it
saves 5 seconds on boot it must be a good thing, right?

It's recommended for 'heavy users', contributors and developers to use the new networking scheme and report of any problems to https://bugs.gentoo.org/
I don't expect any major problems since any sane software lets you pick the interface used and not assume too much automatically.
This thread is mostly duplicate of this thread: https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-948718-highlight-.html |

Yes, it looks as if a simple run with sed will fix things, anyway as a first attempt.
Since most boards nowadays have a single onboard ethernet chip it would have
been helpful if the perpetrators of the change had used eth as the onboard
default rather than eno, but that probably wasn't shiny enough. Oh well,
at least I now know what to watch.
Thanks again - Will |
