Back in November I upgraded a slew of packages that were released that day (see list below). Immediately following I experienced a complete freeze/hang with Mythwelcome (a component of mythtv). Wouldn't even respond to any network--SSH, ping, etc. I was able to track it down to the OpenGL renderer and so I switched it to use Qt instead. Recently however the problem has spread. First the glslideshow component of xscreensaver started causing gpu hangs so I disabled it as well. I discovered as I was investigating that now ANY OpenGL application (even glxgears) will cause the same immediate freeze. Attempting to fix this, I had tried upgrading xf86-video-intel drivers to the latest keyworded version (2.20.19?), and then tried downgrading same package to the version that had just been uninstalled, but the compile failed for some reason. I also tried compiling xf86-video-intel with USE=uxa and set AccelMethod "uxa" in xorg.conf. Didn't work, so I went back to AccelMethod "sna".

I thought upgrading the kernel might help (from 2.5.7-gentoo to 2.6.11-gentoo) but no joy. What finally seemed to fix it was downgrading mesa from 9.0.1 back to 8.0.4-r1. I had previously tried mesa-9.0 with the same result (actually it's possible it got worse with 9.0.1; not sure about the timing). But the downgrade is not a good long-term solution so I want to get to the root of this problem and fix it.

I was tempted to file this as a bug, but I figured something this severe would have already been reported. Since I didn't see a bug I thought I would ask here first to see if it might be something specific in my configuration.

The system platform is an Intel Sandy Bridge i3-2120T on an Asus P8H67-M Pro/CSM motherboard (using the integrated graphics). Arch is amd64, mostly stable with a few keyworded packages.

I generally update the system every day. Here's the list of packages that were upgraded that day (as you can see it was a big day; not conducive for isolating troublemakers):

And my original query about this on the mythtv mailing list: http://www.mythtv.org/pipermail/mythtv-users/2012-November/343319.html

I'd appreciate any ideas!

I assume that 2.6.11 was a typo and you meant 3.6.11.
There was one user in another thread who had problems with X locking up (but not the whole system). It went away after upgrading the kernel.
