PostPosted: Sun Jan 27, 2013 11:31 am    Post subject: Keyboard works, but the mouse doesn't Reply with quote

Greetings! Last night I had a fully working system and I hadn't installed or updated any packages whatsoever. This morning I started X and the mouse wasn't working (it was frozen on the screen), but the keyboard works fine. All dmesg | grep -i mouse gives is:
Code:
[    1.031541] mousedev: PS/2 mouse device common for all mice

And I'm pretty sure that when the mouse was working it also displayed a second line with the actual vendor and name (it's a Logitech PS/2 mouse). /proc/bus/input/devices does not contain any information for a mouse (but it does for the keyboard) and /dev/input/ doesn't contain the mouse0 device either (and again I'm pretty sure it did when the mouse was working).
I was using INPUT_DEVICES="evdev" in /etc/make.conf. I tried adding mouse and keyboard as well - no change. The relevant lines in Xorg.0.log are:
Code:
[    22.058] (**) |-->Input Device "Mouse0"
[    22.125] (WW) Hotplugging is on, devices using drivers 'kbd', 'mouse' or 'vmmouse' will be disabled.
[    22.125] (WW) Disabling Mouse0
[    23.240] (==) fglrx(0): Silken mouse enabled

There is also information from the evdev driver in the log, but it only has to do with the keyboard, power button, etc... no mouse.
Here are the full Xorg.0.log and my xorg.conf:

It seems hw problem. If your mouse is USB device, unplug it, enter command
# tail -f /var/log/messages
to console and plug mouse in. There must be several lines added about new USB device, paste them here.

If you have PS/2 mouse you need look at dmesg for something like this:

serio: i8042 AUX port at 0x60,0x64 irq 12
mousedev: PS/2 mouse device common for all mice

There was an update to sys-fs/udev from 197-r3 to 197-r4 last night (I think), so when I updated and rebooted the mouse worked again.
It often happened that the mouse is frozen after X starts once, but after one reboot it was fixed. This bug (I suppose) has been happening to me for quite some time, I'm wondering whether it will happen again after the update. When I posted the topic, the mouse wasn't working after many reboots, though, so I assumed it was a permanent problem. For now the issue is gone, but should it happen again, I'll post here.
Thanks!

No - it still does that. One out of every two boots, the mouse doesn't work for no reason even after recent updates. Since this morning it hasn't been working at all - not even after six reboots, installing the latest updates, reinstalling the drivers etc... The mouse is currently frozen.
Does anyone have any idea or should I report that as a bug (I think it must be a bug)

post this here:

If your mouse is USB device, unplug it, enter command

to console and plug mouse in. There must be several lines added about new USB device, paste them here.

If you have PS/2 mouse you need look at dmesg for something like this:

serio: i8042 AUX port at 0x60,0x64 irq 12
mousedev: PS/2 mouse device common for all mice

I have mentioned in my first post that it's a PS/2 mouse and that dmesg contains "mousedev: PS/2 mouse device common for all mice". As for the other piece of text, I just booted into Gentoo to check and it is there: serio: i8042 AUX port at 0x60,0x64 irq 12
But also the mouse worked this time.... If I reboot it might not work again and I don't know whether this message will be present then, I can check.

Indeed, this morning it doesn't work again and the message is not there (only a similar message for the keyboard (KBD port) is present). What does that mean?

I'm not specialist, but it seems a hardware problem: your motherboard loses PS/2 mouse port. If you have warranty for MB try to back it to service center. Or just try to use USB mouse :)

Thank you for helping! :-) I will get a USB mouse and try it, but it would be weird if it's a hw problem, since I have a dual boot with Windows and this has never happened when booting into Windows. And my warranty is looong expired, this PC is more than 5 years old :-D

Another way is to play with kernel config, for example turn on "Processor type and features->Reroute for broken boot IRQs" or something like this.

That feature is already built in my kernel. I googled around and came across something which resembles my problem, namely:
https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=10382#c6 and http://forum.tinycorelinux.net/index.php/topic,10731.msg56771.html#msg56771 but in both cases the problem was that IRQ12 was assigned to some other device instead of the mouse. I checked in my boot messages when the mouse was not working and there was no entry for IRQ12, so I'm not sure if the problem is related to that...

You previously mentioned, that under Windows you never had such problems, may be the kernel is reason.
Did you already booting with acpi=off parameter? Also you can try to downgrade kernel version.

I tried noapic option - no improvement, I just tried acpi=off: I rebooted five times and all five times the mouse was detected (very promising), but there is a small issue - now the module asus_atk0110 cannot be loaded and I lose my fans and voltage sensors information. I guess I can live with that if it's the only problem and if it solves the mouse issue :-/

A second problem: I use to use poweroff to shutdown my PC, now it just causes it to halt (the last message displayed is "System halted" and it hangs); shutdown -hP now does the same and now I don't know how to power off the PC (apart from pressing the power button after it halts). Ideas?

Hello Aayla,

do you use systemd? Which desktop environment is running on your system? Booting a systemd enabled system usually expects to be shutdown with 'systemctl poweroff', I experienced the same halt issue on some computers when executing 'shutdown -hP' instead of the systemd equivalent.

Could you supply the output of lspci -k?

Thanks for replying! No, I don't have systemd installed. I'm running XFCE4. lspci -k gives:

ACPI is what powers off the system. If you've disabled ACPI, it's kinda normal that the system won't power off anymore.

I know that, I'm not such a noob. My question was what is the alternative way to power off the PC now.

The point of my post was to say that there isn't any. You can try to disable only parts of ACPI instead of the whole of it. Might be enough to fix the mouse.

I see, thanks! I will go with PS/2 to USB adapter then and hope to go around the original issue, so I can use ACPI again.

Did you also try letting X do its hotplugging thing by removing the xorg.conf completely (or just backin it up)? In order for your graphics card to work you'd need a file in '/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/' like '30-radeon.conf' though
Code:

Section "Device"
        Identifier "Radeon Graphics Card"
        Driver "fglrx"
#you may add your driver options here
EndSection

But if the mouse already only intermittently appears in the kernel log then the issue could hardly be caused by X...

True, I don't think X is causing this, because I don't have xdm started automatically, I start X by issuing startx. And I check the boot messages for serio: i8042 AUX port at 0x60,0x64 irq 12 before I start X and the message is not present (most of the time).
