Sure, but the choice is between utility service, and no utility service. They want utility service and to dictate how that utility is delivered. You don't get to have your cake and eat it. Especially when the objection is wholly irrational.

No, it's an arbitrary and stupid imposition they are forcing. The old meter works fine, use the old meter.

No, old meters waste more energy, are laborious to read, and lack statistical fidelity and usefulness. Going by that logic, we should stay on fossil fuels until we burn every last gramme of the stuff even in attempts to get at the last grain, instead of changing over to cleaner, cheaper, more plentiful sources of power, because fossil 'works fine'.

If this were a single private company, the government would want to break up the monopoly to foster competition, lower prices and choice. Government utilities should be treated equally.
