The corresponding error message in build.log is:
Code:
checking for python module gdbm... no
configure: error: Could not find Python module gdbm
!!! Please attach the following file when seeking support:
!!! /var/tmp/portage/net-dns/avahi-0.6.31/work/avahi-0.6.31/config.log
 * ERROR: net-dns/avahi-0.6.31 failed (configure phase):
 *   econf failed

config.log: http://pastebin.com/7UDBBKFe

This happened during a first-time gnome install on that machine (sony vaio), nevertheless, I ran python-updater without errors, to no avail.

I re-emerged gdbm but that changed nothing. What goes on there?

Cause most likely (depending on the actual error) gdbm itself doesn't matter.
What does, are the useflags on the used python version.

As I've said, post the output of 'emerge -1pv python:2.7' (cause IIRC avahi uses only python2).

The solution was to get rid of the 'python' use flag
