hi,
I've just seen this on youtube:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pW-ohF9tRI8
sadly it's a windows desktop apparently based on rainmeter and dreamscape. Is a similar desktop possible on linux? I'm using opebox..
Although this desktop is a bit to much (look at the big cpu usage), I would like to have many things too, for example the "large desktop" in the sense that you can move with your mouse and the desktop move with you.

I love that he's set up a Mass-Effect menu.

This is actually the kind of thing Linux has been doing all along (I'll bet you he saw some cool Linux desktop somewhere and was inspired by that). Take your pick of DE or WM and tweak like a madman. Use Conky and beef it up. e17 might be a good WM to start with. I think e even has animated desktops, although I didn't see many animated desktop modules actually available. Could build your own. And yes, it will eat your CPU and RAM, but probably not as much as Windows does.

Take a look at fvwm-crystal. It's not like the one you linked to, but it looks uber-spacey and uses a small amount of resources.

Yes and the sound effects are extreme cool :)

I just looked at fvwm-crystal and it's quite cool, but I don't dig into it right now, maybe some other time... The problem with conky is, that I've wasted so much time with tweaking it and even so I didn't get a satisfiable setting..

I had KDE before I came to openbox and there are many things that I like, but it's to bloated for my taste and I don't want a panel, file manager etc...I'm trying to set up compiz as a standalone wm, but I'm failing due to X-server problems (screen not found, and I'm pretty bad at setting up a xorg.conf file). Gentoo wiki says that compiz soon will be depreciated, is this information up to date?

I saw a tread of you (hedmo) where you show howto set up compiz, but only with KDE..
On one hand I want absolutely no "standard Desktop stuff" like file managers, panel etc and on the other hand I want much eye-candy... :?
