Quote:
MELBOURNE: Internet and other components of information communication and technology (ICT) industry annually produces more than 830 million tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2), the main greenhouse gas, and is expected to double by 2020, a new study has found.

Researchers from the Centre for Energy-Efficient Telecommunications (CEET) and Bell Labs explain that the information communications and technology (ICT) industry, which delivers Internet, video, voice and other cloud services, produces about 2 per cent of global CO2 emissions -- the same proportion as the aviation industry produces.

I wonder how much CO2 OTW emits. Although it's most likely to more CH4 than CO2.

Ironic...

My computer: ThinkPad
My server/router: ARMv5
My lights: LED x14, CFL x4

...and I think this whole "go green" thing is an environmental dollars scam.

Why did you spring for LED lights then?

I'm not convinced it isn't a money grab scam, but I do think reducing your energy need is a good idea. Whether climate change is man-made or not, the fact of the matter is that energy is neither free nor infinite. More efficient stuff can't be bad, I guess.

Scroll down in this link to the "How much physical space does the internet take up?" section.

No, the whole "go green" thing is a physics limitation and equilibrium thing.

Never the less, the internet, even though it's entirety consumes considerable energy, saves far more energy on inefficient message passing, reduced travelling for meetings, getting things done, more efficient goods dissemination etc.. More importantly, electricity production can be switched to non-carbon technologies and effectively drop the internet's carbon footprint to a low amount, save for the shipping activity needed to service the internet and move goods around, and even then we could be looking at carbon-free technologies for that too.

The internet doesn't have a carbon problem, we do.
