So I've been working around with this guide http://pappageek.wordpress.com/gumstick-gentoo/ to attempt to have a small install of Gentoo.
Basically it involves binding the usr/src and usr/portage directories so that you don't have that space on your "portable" gentoo install. So far, I've installed a good deal of programs, and using the
minimal" use flag and "noman nodoc noinfo" feature flags to cut down on some of the install size. Afterwards, I've ended up with about 700mb of the system.
However, about 500mb is in the usr/lib and usr/share folder. Mostly things like python, perl libs, and all the share things. Is there anyway to cut down on the libraries or remove the once that aren't needed at runtime? I'd like to see how low I can get my install down to, while still maintaining a working system. Thanks! |

If you can use the C locale and don't need special locales, you can use localepurge (emerge it) to get rid of the translations for all the error messages (or just blow them all away). You can also get rid of the extra timezones. I don't think this all adds up that much.
But there's just a lot of libraries for portage/perl/python that can't be removed...
I just have an irc bot machine (a Geode GX1 266MHz) that is running Gentoo with full emerge/gcc support, but it's still more than 400MB.
The tradeoff is whether to remove the ability to emerge/use portage, that would save all the perl and python stuff which is fairly huge... Without portage you can't update it, except with another setup... but it's not unmaintainable. _________________ Core-i7-2700K@4.1GHz/8GB RAM/180GB SSD/Intel HD3000 graphics
