I have been trying to follow this tutorial to make a gentoo usb stick.
http://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Install_Gentoo_on_a_bootable_USB_stick

No problems until I boot. It doesn't find any of the modules. I'm a little confused by this. I thought genkernel build that initramfs which internalized the modules

Is this based on the modules I was using when I ran genkernel?

http://www.sysresccd.org/Sysresccd-manual-en_How_to_install_SystemRescueCd_on_an_USB-stick is a better source for gentoo based usb drives. As no part of the installing linux system becomes part of the final system, any running linux that has the same bitness as the intended installed system and which supports chroot may be used. The minimal iso has been having problems since june 2012.

Thanks, I'll give that a try. I guess that makes sense. as long as I can get an internet connection I guess I really don't need any specific utilities to install gentoo that I wouldn't find on a rescue disk.

Do you have any idea why that problem was occurring? Does genkernel use the current kernel configuration. I downloaded kernel sources, so I kind of assumed that what it generated would have been completely independent of my system.
