PostPosted: Sun Dec 30, 2012 2:52 pm    Post subject: [SOLVED] Gnome Shell unable to start Gnome 3.6.2 Reply with quote

Recently I updated my world which pulled Gnome 3.6.x. Now I can't login to Gnome although fall back mode is working. Revdep rebuild is not showing anything. Preserved rebuild is empty. My :0-greeter.log is looking lie this:
Code:
Ostrzeżenie menedżera okien: Log level 16: Failed to load apps: Failed to look up menu_file for "applications.menu"

failed to create drawable
JS LOG: GNOME Shell started at Sun Dec 30 2012 15:14:07 GMT+0100 (CET)
failed to create drawable
Ostrzeżenie menedżera okien: CurrentTime used to choose focus window; focus window may not be correct.
Ostrzeżenie menedżera okien: Got a request to focus the no_focus_window with a timestamp of 0.  This shouldn't happen!
Ostrzeżenie menedżera okien: Log level 8: g_variant_compare: assertion `!g_variant_is_container (a)' failed
gnome-session[4287]: WARNING: Detected that screensaver has left the bus
gnome-session[4287]: CRITICAL: gsm_manager_set_phase: assertion `GSM_IS_MANAGER (manager)' failed
g_dbus_connection_real_closed: Remote peer vanished with error: Underlying GIOStream returned 0 bytes on an async read (g-io-error-quark, 0). Exiting.

(gnome-settings-daemon:4380): GLib-GIO-WARNING **: Error releasing name org.gnome.SettingsDaemon: Połączenie jest zamknięte
Ostrzeżenie menedżera okien: Log level 8: g_source_remove: assertion `tag > 0' failed

:0-slave.log is empty.
I thought that maybe some settings from previous Gnome 3.4 that was working quite fine, are causing the problem, and I created a new user to test it, but the outcome is same, sorry something went wrong Log Off.

I was trying to rebuild Gnome-shell and dbus-glib without any effect. I have no idea what the hell is wrong, any help greatly appreciated.

--oneshot will fetch the files again and compile a package again without using files relevant to that package that are already on your computer
--deep --with-bdeps=y will check for pretty much all dependencies
--newuse will emerge with current flags in case there has been any change to your make.conf since last gnome version.

# emerge --deep --with-bdeps=y --newuse --oneshot package

Your in for a clean recompilation, if the issue still persist there is a problem with something else than previous settings.

are you using any non-stock themes or extensions?
I ran into 2 issues since the theme I was using became incompatible, likewise some extensions I had enabled were not supported.

Thanks for replay.
This pulled recompilation of gconf and imagemagick - ufortunatly this did not change my situation, for my user and new clean user the outcome is still the same:
SOMETHIN WENT WRONG (...) LOGG OFF.

Thanks for replay.

Themes no - extensions yes but all of them were installed locally.
As I wrote I created a completely new user and added him to standard groups including video group and for this clean account the outcome is exactly the same - I made sure to disable all extensionst via: eselect gnome-shell-extensions before testing both accounts. This is wierd I think is time to leave Gnome 3 :-( :-(.

Can you post the output of
Code:
emerge --info

please?

I don't see why you should give up on gnome just yet.
We need to establish exactly what is causing this, otherwise we can't help.

I would like to know the reason of this behavior, because the greeter log is not pointing me at any direction.

I made sure to disable all extensions

I once had to remove the bad extension from the folder, otherwise I encountered the same problem.
I think the problem extension was for the weather.
So, it is one thing to disable the extensions, and it is another thing to actually remove it from the extensions folder.
I would remove all extensions and try again.

Also, if there is no information in the greeter log, then that is not to blame.
Is there a .xsession-errors file in your home folder?
It may also be of use.

Cheers.

As I wrote I tested on clear new account. What I did to make sure it's not extension problem was removing (unmerging) gnome-extra/gnome-shell-frippery. Clearing whole home catalog for my test user, and trying to log in.
The outcome is still the same, same msgs in greeter.log. Then I remove gnome-extra/gnome-shell-extensions clear the whole home catalog again and try to log in again - same result. I don't think is an extension problem - something else in my environment is crushing gnome.

I'm afraid there is no .xsession-errors in test user home catalog.

I'm using bumblebee too and dont have any probs at all

but when u install gnome-shell. it give this messages
Quote:
"GNOME Shell is unstable under gallium-mode i915/i965 mesa drivers."
"Make sure that classic architecture for i915 and i965 drivers is"
"selected using 'eselect mesa'."

I had some trouble with gnome-shell today. ( i clean my make.conf use flags ) After rebuilding nm-applet the issue when away.
But the differently with your comp is i use systemd as init

i never success in getting openrc and networkmanager to get along - my wireless connection always hardlock gnome ( all gnome versions)

I sow this massage when I was installing Gnome 3.4 - and I made sure to switch to classic arch even for sw. So this is not it.

I rebuild whole networkmanger and nm-applet w/o success same results :(
I never had problems networkmanger was working with Gnome 2.x, Mate 1.4 and finally Gnome 3.4.

andrzejk, this is probably late but did you try doing a emerge --depclean after emerging gnome-3.6? Without it, I got similar error messages (both :0-slave.log and .cache/gdm/session.log), in particular:
Code:

(...)
GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.PolicyKit1.Error.Failed: An authentication agent already exists for the given subject
JS ERROR: !!!   Exception was: Polkit.Error: GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.PolicyKit1.Error.Failed: An authentication agent already exists for the given subject
JS ERROR: !!!     message = '"GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.PolicyKit1.Error.Failed: An authentication agent already exists for the given subject"'
    JS ERROR: !!!     fileName = '"/usr/share/gnome-shell/js/ui/components/polkitAgent.js"'
    JS ERROR: !!!     lineNumber = '329'
    JS ERROR: !!!     stack = '"0 anonymous()@/usr/share/gnome-shell/js/ui/components/polkitAgent.js:329
(...)

gnome-session would then crash with an "oops..". Looks like that some packages from gnome-2/gnome-3.4 that are not needed anymore in gnome-3.6 were the cause of problem.

I hope this helps other users.

Hmm I did not but now I did. Depclean did not remove anything significant to gome enviroment, just old gentoo-sorces, java virtual, some json package. After trying to log in to gnome 3.6 same result as before :(. However I can not rule out the possibility that the Mate environment I still have installed is causing some problems to Gmome 3.6, I used Gnome 3.4 along side Mate w/o problem. Removing Mate at the moment is not possible this is currently my only computer and most important tool I use to earn some money. I think It's time to gave up. Seems Gmome 3.6 hates me. Sad thing I can not recall when was the last time I gave up on something on Linux. :(

andrzejk before installing gnome-3.6 I actually had installed mate from the sabayon overlay. Doing a emerge --depclean did in fact remove a bunch of the mate packages, so I would say that mate might be the problem.
Since mate is your current environment and you need it quickly, what about you use quickpkg to create binary packages of your emerged mate and related dependencies? That way you can unmerge mate to test gnome-3.6 and then use emerge to install the binary packages (as opposed to compiling them). If this is not acceptable I can build a list of potential directories which you can have a look at to identify possible mate software that is autostarted during session and causes policykit to go nuts.
What do you think?

This is a good idea, I will try to do it, however I got flu so I don't think I will be able to do it before the end of the week. I will post the results, thanks.

Hi,

I had a somewhat similar problem when gnome-shell did not start, but all the autostart applications worked and I was able to see a clean wallpaper and a mouse pointer.
Then I realized that I had run metacity --replace manually (for some reason it stopped being a default WM for my old GNOME 2), so I just removed this launcher and was able to use gnome-shell (uses WM mutter).

Not sure if this will help, but I guess it worth to check.

Today I finally manage to get out of bed, create the binary packages from mate set, and remove whole mate enviroment to see if this will help.
And it did after removing Mate and then deplcean - whole mate was removed from the system and Gnome shell loaded correctly.
Seems Gnome 3.6 have to be installed separately from Mate, 3.4 did not have this problem. Not sure if I will choose Gnome 3.x at the end it still lacks few things I got used to, but at least I can fully test it.
Thanks a lot for help guys.
