PostPosted: Tue Jan 01, 2013 6:29 pm    Post subject: [SOLVED] xf86-video-intel upgrade and no text in gdm after Reply with quote

I upgraded xf86-video-intel (all x11-drivers actually) with use +udev today which pulled a new udev -171-r9 (running stable). After reboot I cannot see any text typed in gdm's login box and I can't see the text on the buttons for (Continue) or Cancel or start again, or whatever those buttons said but I can see the underscore symbol for the shortcut. After typing my username and password (both of which I can't see) I log in but the screen goes black.
I am posting from elinks while doing a global upgrade world. Will try to post Xorg.log when I can but I couldn't find anything relevant. Any help would be very appreciated

When your upgrade finishes, try:

1) checking dmesg for anything unusual

2) checking gdm log for any errors

3) rebuilding and restarting gdm

Thanks, I'll try that.. in the meantime I ldd'd gdm and didn't see anything missing. I suppose I could always try back the previous xf86-video-intel which might be causing this trouble.

Ok so I'm going crazy with this problem. I upgraded world without a hitch. Reboot and the very same problem. At the gdm screen I can read "Wellcome" "username" and the text underneath "please enter your username" Also at the corner I can read the date and time. But the text in the buttons is invisible and the text typed on the textbox is invisible. Also if I login the screen goes black. I can't find anything wrong on Xorg.log (and I don't know how to paste it from elinks now). It would seem as if some font got screwed... but I don't understand how the upgrade of udev would do that. I'm in need of help.

This happens with core i3 but not with i7 here, i3 uses packages made with i7

This is a much older laptop, it doesn't look like an issue of cpu... for some reason I started to believe it is an issue with xf86-video-intel. Will try vesa. Here are some other things I tried
*)Trying rolling back xf86-video-intel to previous version. It no longer compiles (after I did the upgrade world)
*)Tried running unstable gdm, it was worse, it went directly to a blank screen.
*)Added a lot of FontPath to the xorg config files.

Still no gnome here

The nexus of the malfunction seems to be gdm --- what does the gdm log say?

After noticing a bunch of weird relocation bounds error from the i915 module on dmesg I recompiled the newest kernel 3.6.11 and now it boots fine (so far). I guess it was some incompatibility between xf86-video-intel and the i915 kernel module.
