VDR 1.6 is allmost 5 years ago and still the newest in portage?

My vdr runs on the overlay vdr-testing / vdr-devel . May this be an option for you?

New versions are added when a Gentoo developer works on it. If there are no interested developers, or if the available developers are inattentive, then no bump occurs. Given the very long wait, I suspect it is no longer maintained in Gentoo.
