A big hello to all, I am writing here because I have a problem seemingly "insurmountable." But first some assumptions: currently I consider myself a "power newbie", a noob well informed and "receptive" but still noob .. hehehe.
However, I come from years of using GNU / Linux distros, but always Ubuntu or derivates. Since I recently build a machine a bit 'better performance, I decided to make the "big jump" to carve out a Gentoo system adapted to the potential of my hardware. At the moment, it is only a leap of faith.
First things first: I configured a machine with the following components:
M / B: Asus Crosshair V Formula
CPU: AMD FX-8150 8 Core
RAM: 16 GB
VGA: nVidia 550 Ti 1GB Ram
HDD: IBM 1 TB Sata
Keyboard logitech G19 <- attention to this.

So, I downloaded both LiveDVD and minimal, and with unetbootin I made a USB bootable stick. The system starts, until the moment in which I have to choose the keyboard mapping. At that point the keyboard leds go out, I can not select anything. Not bad, I think, I will change later, but at that point it the USB stick is not more recognized, and does not continue the installation, as if the USB system is "stopped". What's going on?

Thanks for your attention.

PS. Sorry for my english, I made this post in the Italian section too..

Welcome to Gentoo! Your English is very good.

The problem is in kernel support for USB devices. I recommend that you use The System Rescue CD to install. There is no difference from the Gentoo CD, except it has better hardware support and xfce.

You can also use any of your Ubuntu based CDs as long as they have chroot installed. Since none of the data on the install CD is installed, it is completely safe.

Jerrino,

Welcome to Gentoo.

As your English is perfectly adequate for you to express your problems and much better than my Italian, lets continue to use English.
Please don't cross post until you have determined that you are unlikely to get a response to your first post. That normally, over 24 hours, as it takes a whole day for everyone to have the opportunity to see your post.

You are quick to point to your keyboard as the source of the problem. That may be true. Can you borrow another keyboard to test with?

I'm with The Doctor for installing with System Rescue CD.

Thank you The Doctor for this quick reply!!! I want install Gentoo as only OS on my pc (i am currently running Linuxmint). So, you're saying to burn a System Rescue CD on a USB stick, then prepare the PC, and with chroot install Gentoo on it, I am right? Well I will try this soon! But, the weird thing that I am seeing, is that until the keyboard mapping selection, the system recognizes Usb stick, and loads the basic system.. Why that?

No problem NeddySeagon, I will continue here in english (Google translator is one of my best friends, hehehehe), i just post here to increase the chances of a response.
Well, actually I don't have another keyboard to try, but tomorrow i will search for another one. Then I will write my "steps" (hope ahead!!!) Thanks

Chrooting is step 6 in the Gentoo Handbook so any disk you use needs to support it. There is not a big difference between different install media since you do most of it yourself.

Jerrino,

It may be USB power related. A USB root hub, which is usually a pair is stacked USB connectors is permitted to supply a total of 500mA for all connected devices.
A USB stick may want most of that. When the root hub is overloaded, it switches off power to one or more devices.

Try moving your keyboard to other USB connectors.

Yes. Download the System RescueCD *.ISO file and follow the instructions on the site to put it onto a USB stick.

Adding "usbcore.autosuspend=0" to the kernel command line might help.

All devices are connected to the MB usb ports directly. A self-powered USB hub may help?

I will try this, thanks

Ok guys, I am here again to update you on my progress. I was able to boot from System Rescue CD and install a minimal system on my PC. But I had many troubles to get my video card working. I am running with a nVidia GTX 550 Ti on a motherboard with AMD 990FX chipset. I've read in many post on this forum too, that problem (cannot open device /dev/nvidia0) can be solved disabling IOMMU, in kernel AND in BIOS. but, if i do that, Keyboard, mouse and ALL usb devices won't work. Maybe the liveDVD kernel does not have AMD IOMMU support? Don-t know, but, when i have installed system with a kernel "hand-made" compiled (with IOMMU) i get video card errors. I have try to build Nouveau driver (built in kernel), emerged nvidia-drivers, also installing the nvidia's website binary. Nothing, video does not work in X. Now i'm trying to build a genkernel, then i will post here again. Tips are welcome!!!

Thanks

EDIT: just another question... if i modify my /etc/portage/make.conf with some new cflags, the command
emerge --deep world

recompiles ALL software according to new specs??

Thanks Billwo,
but my Ubuntu's memories tells me that Nouveau drivers are not good enough for my target, that is to build a "supercomputer" according to my hardware's "power". I think that nvidia's binaries are the better way to do this.
Otherwise, there is still Ubuntu...

Jerrino,

You can install the nvidia drivers, but you can't mix Nouveau and the proprietary blob. You mentioned Nouveau in your post so I thought you were pursuing that avenue to get the card working.

This site would be more appropriate then: http://en.gentoo-wiki.com/wiki/Nvidia

Jerrino,

Neuveau and nvidia-drivers require incompatible kernel settings. You must choose one.

When your Gentoo is working, there is a way to have both drivers but you have to choose at boot time. Anyway, for now, make your Gentoo work. Make it better/shinier/faster later.
