Due to my recent problems with ALSA and S/PDIF "distortion" with Asus Xonar STX, I want to try OSS instead and see if it solves the problem.

I followed the guide at http://en.gentoo-wiki.com/wiki/OSS4 and installed layman using the guide at http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/overlays/userguide.xml

I get this output from layman:
Code:

# layman -a oss-overlay
* Running... # /usr/bin/hg clone http://hg.atheme.org/users/majeru/portage-overlay// /var/lib/layman/oss-overlay
abort: error: Name or service not known
* Failed to add overlay "oss-overlay".
* Error was: Adding overlay "oss-overlay" failed!

At first, I thought it was a layman related problem. I tried to recompile layman with mercurial, subversion, cvs and git in my package.use just to be sure that it has everything it needs. It turns out, that if you go to [url]http://hg.atheme.org/users/majeru/portage-overlay/[url] you will find that this website does not exist. I also found out that I can install other overlays with no problems.

So, how do I install OSS when I can't get it with layman? Is there going to be a new mirror or something for "oss-overlay" or is there another way to install OSS?

Thanks in advance :-)

Hi, you can see more overlays here which include OSS: http://gpo.zugaina.org/media-sound/oss
In irc earlier someone got it installed and working using flora overlay specifically after hitting your same issue (that overlay/package seems to have been gone quite some time). Follow the wiki as normal but use flora overlay to install.

//Edit: I added a small note on the wiki article, if anyone thinks it could be improved or re-written differently please step in :)

Thanks :) I hope that the Layman mirrors will be updated in the near future to prevent problems for other OSS users.
