How, or what tools to use, do I view mpeg, etc. type movies in newsgroups?
I like the reader pan, but I can't seem to figure out how to accomplish this task. Searching gentoo and google didn't specifically address this(nor did the pan website). TIA, Bill |

If your question is can PAN automatically launch your MPEG viewer so that you can view an MPEG you just downloaded, then I think the answer is no. I use PAN to download MPEGs, then view then in whatever view I decide to use, Xine, Noatun, mplayer, etc. If you like that feature added to PAN, then suggest it to the developer(s).

Thanks cesman. That looks like one way to skin the cat, though I'd prefer not to dnld the files to my hd.
I'm not tied to pan. How do others accomplish this? Are there plugins for other newsreaders? etc. Bill |

I'm willing to test if knode is able to do that but you need to tell me which newsgroup, messagetitle and messagedate I can use.

For example:
alt.binaries.multimedia.3-stooges
Any of the titles. I can open none of them. At best I can download them and probably then play them. |

knode isn't able to do that but I checked the net-news section in portage and saw newspost and glitter. Both packages are for binaries in newsgroups. Please let me know if these packages are working well.

I think nautilus is your best bet. Try putting the following url in the nautilus location bar:
nntp://newserver.goes.here.com/alt.binaries.multimedia.3-stooges
I saw most movies in that newsgroup were compressed with rar though... Then there is no way you can watch them without downloading them first.
Greetings,
Gert-Jan |

Thanks to all for the help. I don't have much current gnome installed and don't want to upgrade to gnome 2.0 yet. So no nautilus. emerged glitter and also looked at knode.
It seems that to view rar, mpg, mpeg, etc. I have to dnld first(with all of the newsreaders), which is a PITA, and then view and then delete. Oh well.
Thanks again, Bill. |
