Question for you guys: I'm getting a new machine by the end of the week. I want to try installing Gentoo (right now I use Mandrake), but I want GCC3.2 and I want the system to use that compiler for my installation. But if Gentoo 1.4 isn't out by then, how should I install everything? If I just use 1.2 and the install guide, I'm guessing that won't give me what I want.
For that matter, I don't understand the point of Gentoo versions when you install everything from the latest sources anyway...??
I've been using mandrake for years, but I've never installed a Gentoo system so I'm not 100% sure how it all works. Please enlighten me! Thanks! |

Thanks - I read that one before, but I'm not entirely sure what it means to me. I guess what I shouuld ask is: Will there be anything in 1.4 that I can't get by installing 1.2 with the right "profile"? |

As long as you're using the right profile.... what you get is what you see.
My suggestion is that if you want to install Gentoo w/ GCC-3.2, instead of using the tarball included in the CD you do
Code: | wget http://www.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distributions/gentoo/releases/build/1.4_beta/stage1-x86-1.4_beta.tbz2 | .
Even though its beta I can tell you they're pretty solid. _________________ Hello. |
