I just rebuilt my linux-3.5.7-gentoo system to fix up a problem with nut. I am using the latest genkernel.
I cd'd to /usr/src/linux and typed in genkernel --dmraid all, but genkernel --dmraid --menuconfig all gave the same results.
When I attempted to reboot my system, it failed when trying to mount the root partition. Looking at the mount statements, it was mounting partitions with names of the form, pdc_dcgidcdjb, and pdc_dcgidcdjbp1 through pdc_dcgidcdjbp(n) where (n) was the partition number. Previously, the naming scheme was pdc_dcgidcdbj(n) where (n) is the partition number.
It is also different from the other linux system on my computer (kubuntu).
This is a serious problem, which means that if I change it, I lose compatibility with kubuntu (I think) and also with previous kernels.
Is there a way around this problem?

In the end, the only solution I found was to change the boot command to reflect the new name for the root partition on the root statement on the boot command and to change all other partitions in fstab. This sucks as old systems will not run anymore, but this one does.
BTW: The way to determine what the new partitions are named in to do an
ls /dev/mapper |
