Looking to tidy up my office area. I'd prefer to avoid creating a "hearing protection required" workspace.

I have an old Antec (or variant), pretty decent, pretty large, but only accepts 80mm fans, or something in that range. Also a huge repository for dust.

My other case is an Antec 300. Also pretty decent, not quite as large. Also a pretty significant repository for dust. The main issue with this case & horizontal / shelf mounting is the top fan.

I'd prefer to not spend a fortune, but the "modular" design of some of the newer cases is appealing. Having the ability to remove drives without screws (or remove the screws after extracting the sled, etc.).

Any suggestions?

I might consider a mobile rack (~10u) at some point in the future, but only if it turns out to be "necessary."

Didn't find much I was willing to risk spending the money on.

I went with the Fractal Design Arc Midi Tower.

Larger than I really would prefer, but shorter than its predecessor. Though wider. Room for 8 drives internally, so should suffice. Also had to get a larger PSU than I wanted, but it is at least >80%, and should accommodate most of what I'm likely to do with it. Need to migrate the server into this case, and the workstation into the current "server" case (Antec 300).

I think rack mounted servers are generally loud because of small fans. Still, you should be able to find decent ones at the usual places.

PJP (or others),

for future refrence, I like Norco for rack mount cases. NOt as nice as supermicro, but the features to price points are nicely ballanced

Thanks. I'd had them on my short list, but in the end, I decided they were too much money vs. features. Primarily drive rails, but I was also able to get filters with the Fractal case.

I'd wanted filters for a while, but when I cleaned the case this one is replacing, I was amazed at how thick one of the intakes was (no fan). And on that one, the front panel doesn't easily remove.

Wow, this Fractal Design case is quiet. Obviously that is mostly the fans, but I've checked twice (separately) to make sure it was on.
