I've recently installed Gentoo from the latest livecd and volume worked up until I emerged xfce4-volume, set the keybindings for my keyboard, and rebooted. After that notifyd now shows when my keyboard increases the volume, but even setting my volume to max on alsamixer doesn't play any sound. I then read through the alsa guide on the gentoo wiki, and after rc-update alsasound boot I now don't even see the notifyd messages. Also, xfce4-volumed doesn't display anything when ran from the command line.

Does anyone know what is wrong?

Hardware: No soundcard. Just using the motherboard's audio output.

Don't know if you still have this problem ... but if so, please check that in AlsaMixer, none of the output channels have a "MM" at the bottom. If one does, select it with the cursor keys (left/right) and press M. This should unmute it. Make sure you see all channels by toggling them with F3/F5. Make also sure that you don't accidentially work on a "hidden" soundcard which you didn't actually use. Check by pressing F6.
