I wonder if "e" is for "extracted" or something silly like "enhanced". |

I voted gnudev. I'm the only one, but my second choice is nudev which, as of this writing, is the most popular. Either one captures the correct flavor, I think. Although I appreciate the current eudev name, I think it's promotes confusion because it's pronounced exactly the same as udev.
And, of course, according to Greg Kroah-Hartman on gentoo-dev, the name is vitally important.
Also, moved from Off the Wall to Gentoo Chat because it'll give it better visibility and, frankly, I think it fits better here.

How many other distros would possibly go this route of using the forked udev?
If the intended audience is Gentoo only, I like moodev.
If there's sentiment across a lot of distros (slackware, mint, etc.) and lead them in development, then I'd probably go nudev. _________________ Intel Core i7 2700K/Radeon R7 250/24GB DDR3/256GB SSD

Now all that's left is to rename systemd to "usdev".
Let me explain:
The European Union is awesome and the US is nothing more than a pathetic piece of shit, just like systemd. |
The name eudev has nothing to do with Europe. It was a proposal that a Ubuntu developer made. He suggested that it stand for "Embedded Udev", although the team has not made a decision on whether or not to recognize that interpretation. We only decided to adopt the name. It was the most popular one among us.

The project page is online, which should answer your question:
http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/eudev/index.xml
The official announcement will follow within 48 hours. |

Ah, looks like even Canonical decided to jump ship... Looks like Mint too if they use upstart?
Now Busybox's mini-udev is called mdev... that's really should be the "embedded udev" ... _________________ Intel Core i7 2700K/Radeon R7 250/24GB DDR3/256GB SSD

man...there's a whole lotta butthurt in that thread.
which warms my heart and makes me happy
going to laugh maniacally when everyone but "GnomeOS" has jumped ship. Even moreso if systemd dies off as a niche trinket - this wonderful mental image of someone prematurely graying, cigarette in hand, working alone on "the next big thing" that everyone decided they hated years ago. Eventually, current udev+systemd will be known as betamaxd, and have a small cult following of rabid devotees. _________________ Lost configuring your system?

In a way, eudev is an interesting choice - probably by accident - simply because it's a different way to spell something that is pronounced identically. |

Since no one has pointed it out, the name eudev contains the prefix 'eu' which basically means good in Greek. It's a clever name in my opinion, but I suppose name doesn't really matter anyways. |

I really think it would have been much better to get people's ideas on a name first, and only then poll the ones that came up.
In any event, I like moodev, for Gentoo, and the idea of an embedded dev, so what about mudev similar to µdev but using ascii, and pronounced like moodev, which keeps the Gentoo feeling to it: after all it came from Gentoo users. Or myu-dev if you know the Greek letter, or read it as microdev if you must ;)
After all, it doesn't matter how you read it, so long as it is a simple package name that doesn't get confused with udev, and like some others I hate suffices like udev-ng. Also, I like the idea of the same spirit as mdev, but with full udev functionality for non-embedded environments.
I'd go with moodev if it were just internal to Gentoo, but since it can be used on other distros (debian people are already collaborating in #gentoo-udev) I think they'd find it a bit silly. |

Isn't this poll academic now? After all, both the official and unofficial forks already have names. _________________ Clevo W230SS: amd64, VIDEO_CARDS="intel modesetting nvidia".

Oh what's the unofficial one called? Its package name is still udev afaik, which stops it being in the portage tree. nudev originally came from there (khayyam proposed it iirc.) And the OP mentioned discussion in the #gentoo-udev channel, tho if they're sticking with eudev I don't know. |

This name hiddenly imply the FSF endorse it.
a very bad choice, i think. |
