Hi, I've update xorg from 1.12 to 1.13 e nvidia-driver to 304, but now X don't start.
I'm using gnome 2.23 x64 with xdm as display manager and i've just updated all the xorg drivers and rebuild the graphics modules.

Here my log:

Something might be wrong with your eselect opengl settings. Try switching to xorg-x11 and back.

It's strange...i've downgraded nvidia-drivers and xorg-drivers and server and now all works fine.
Is a possible bug?

Hi mrl4n,
Do you have an xorg.conf file?
If so where is it located?
I ran into the same problem today.
If xorg.conf is located in /etc/X11 it won't work.
I copied mine as 20-xorg.conf to /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d.
Also run eselect opengl list and check to see if nvidia or xorg are set.
Gerard.

Remember if you emerge xorg-server you also have to re-install all the xf86-input drivers.
If you don't your mouse/keyboard won't work.
Gerard.

Just updated and xorg-server and got hit by similar problem.

X starts if I remove xorg.conf, but fails if xorg.conf is present either in /etc/X11 or in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d
From the log I see that xorg.conf is loaded OK, goes through the loading of extensions, but then X bails out

I have the same problem. Did somebody file a bug?

"nouveau" won't work. I switched to nvidia but it will not work /etc/X11/xorg.conf
When xorg.conf was empty, nvidia starts with ugly fonts.

How to automatically generate xorg.conf with nvidia?

That is all I have in my:
Code:
 Section "Device"
  Identifier "GeForce2 Pro/GTS"
  Driver     "nvidia"
 EndSection

Section "Module"
Load "glx"
# Load "dri"
# Load "GLcore"
Disable "dri"
EndSection

  Section "Files"
        ModulePath "/usr/lib64/xorg/modules"
        ModulePath "/usr/lib64/xorg/modules/extensions"
        ModulePath "/usr/lib64/xorg/opengl/xorg-x11"
        ModulePath "/usr/lib64/xorg/opengl/xorg-x11/extensions"
  EndSection

 Section "Screen"

  DefaultDepth 24
  SubSection "Display"

 EndSection

Joseph_sys,
If you had browsed this whole thread you'd have read my solution.
I had xorg.conf in /etc/X11 too but xorg-server now ignores that.
You have to move it to /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d.
It's xorg-server that's causing this not nouveau or nvidia.
Read the Gentoo xorg docs .
Gerard.

I'm not sure xorg-server generate all that mess.
I have downgraded to xorg-server-1.12.2 (the one that has been working previously) but it is not working anymore, so something else was messed up.

How start nvidia?
Should I have anything in: /etc/modprobe.d/nvidia.conf ?
I've try putting IN:
Code:
update-modules
modprobe -r nvidia
modprobe nvidia

But I get an error message when I type: modprobe nvidia

I've put in: /etc/conf.d/modules
modules="nvidia"

but it doesn't do anything.

I've copied as in your previous post xorg.conf to a directory: /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d
but starting xdm does not start nvidia X server.
Yes, I run: modprobe -r nvidia
modprobe nvidia

You mean this one:
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/nvidia-guide.xml

Yes, I did. But as you suggest the xorg.conf should be in dir: /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d
This documentation is not up to date.

Regarding your earlier information regarding moving xorg.conf into directory "xorg.conf.d"
I don't know where did you get it from but it does not seem correct. I generate xorg.conf with:
Xorg -configure
copied it into: /etc/X11/ and nvidia is working just fine.

Of course I meant this one!
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/xorg-config.xml
Some more had this problem and their graphic card was Intel or Radeon.
Gerard.

I just want to add that my xorg.conf file is still in /etc/X11/ and I'm not having any trouble with X starting. I'm using the nvidia driver 304.94 and twinview.

I'm having the same problem with three machines; Amd64, x86 and PPC32

In all three cases, I was able to get X to start again by downgrading xorg-server from 1.13.0-r1 back to 1.12.2 and rebuilding the X drivers modules. Thank you for lighting the way, mrl4n!

What I would like to understand is this: Does xorg-server 1.13.x require a new config-file layout? The X configuration guide now talks about putting files in /etc/conf.d

With the machines I had problems with, all of them had a single X config file /etc/X11/xorg.conf and though I did try simply removing that file and letting X detect and auto-configure itself, it didn't work.

One thing all three had in common is that when X did not start, they all eventually went to text-mode displays and displayed the standard error message "X could not start, would you like to see the detailed error-log?"

When selecting OK, a text-window with nothing displayed in it came up. I am guessing this is probably not by design.

So I'd like to re-attempt upgrading xorg-server, but I'm not sure what the correct course of action is. I suppose maybe breaking the existing xorg.conf file into its constituent /etc/conf.d/xxxx pieces?

Any tips or insights welcome. I'll post back here if I ever get it upgraded and working.

Thanks for your help!

One thing all three had in common is that when X did not start, they all eventually went to text-mode displays and displayed the standard error message "X could not start, would you like to see the detailed error-log?"

When selecting OK, a text-window with nothing displayed in it came up. I am guessing this is probably not by design...

I've see it too

I'm a total noob, so don't put too much stock behind anything I say, but I could have sworn that last time I did a full system update I read a message saying that Xorg Server wouldn't work if you updated to version 1.13 unless you rebuilt all of your kernel modules due to the fact that 1.13 uses a different API from 1.12...or something like that. I dunno, but I was having similar problems earlier this week and rebuilding the modules worked for me.

EDIT: Oh hey this was already solved...sorry about that.

Hello fellows!

The workaround given by mrl4n, thawn and possibly others does work for both my x86 and amd64 machines, but NOT for my PPC32 machine.

This is quite odd, given that they're all pretty much configured the same way.

In all 3 cases, I applied the following procedure:

Made sure the line
gnome-base/gdm -accessibility
was in the file
/etc/portage/package.use

rebuilt GDM
emerge -vD gdm

Updated to xorg-server-1.13.1
emerge xorg-server

ran
qlist -I -C x11-drivers/

rebuilt the listed modules
emerge -vD nvidia-drivers xf86-input-evdev xf86-input-joystick (x86 and amd64)
emerge -vD xf86-input-evdev xf86-video-ati (PPC32)

Then restarted the machine.
shutdown -r now

This resulted in fixing the problem on all but the PPC32 machine.

I will open a new bug in the Gentoo bugzilla unless someone can point me to an existing one. I searched but could not find a bug that fit this.
