I'm seeing "widget" font corruption in firefox (16.0.2) when using kde-4.9.3
under a 30-bit xorg (1.13.0) environment.

You can see a screenshot here:

http://wstaw.org/m/2012/11/17/plasma-desktops17947.png

Notice:

the ff Preferences box selected "Content" toolbar button text
the menubar folders' text
the selected "Slashdot" bookmark in the left sidebar bookmarks list
the left sidebar bookmarks list also shows blank separators that are "line"
separators under 24-bit

I do see some similar widget text corruption for *selected* folder and message
"widgets" in Mozilla Thunderbird.

I have a 30-bit monitor (Asus PA246Q), 30-bit video card (Nvidia GTX660),
xorg.conf is set to '30' for "Screen" --> DefaultDepth and "Display" --> Depth.
'nvidia-settings' shows depth at 30.

Any ideas?

Relevant packages: pixman, cairo, xorg-server. Try stable versions of pixman and cairo?

xorg-server 1.13 branch has more patches, e.g. random corruption.

thank you for your suggestions.

I emerged, x11-libs/pixman-0.28.0, x11-libs/cairo-1.12.8, and x11-base/xorg-server-1.13.0-r1. Unfortunately, there was zero change in the visual corruption.

So, try pixman 0.26.0 etc. - the stable version.

Have you checked whether xorg-server-1.13.0-r1 includes the patch I linked to?

new X11 package set might become stable soon - you might try it out : https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=440872

downgrading to 'pixman-0.26.0' did not make a difference.

At this point, I haven't checked the source for 'xorg-server-1.13.0-r1' to see if it includes the patch, but if it does it's not helping with my issue.

The end of the 440872 bug report shows it as stable on amd64 late Friday afternoon, but as of late Saturday night the xorg-server ebuild hasn't been updated.

I've noticed an additional symptom...

Due to some email configuration issues, I opened Mozilla Thunderbird, not my regular email client, and noticed that its three panes (folders list, emails list, and message) were not completely opaque, showing a very small amount of background application windows bleed through. Mozilla Firefox usually resides beside itself on its own virtual desktop that has a neutral background color. When I moved it to the same desktop that had Thunderbird on it, I could see that Firefox also has that same small amount of background windows bleed through.

Of the various application windows that I have open, about 15, these are the only ones exhibiting this behaviour.

Currently, I can't find any KDE setting available to set windows' opacity. It's my habit to set windows' opacity to 100%, as I find windows transparency to be annoying.
